What a dramatic way to finish the domestic season in Scotland.

After a thrilling and historic treble treble win for Celtic over Hearts in yesterday's Scottish Cup final, one thought they couldn't have had us more on the edge of our seats.

But they did, as St Mirren and Dundee United took us all the way through two legs of their final before the Paisley side prevailed on penalty kicks.

We'll see the Buddies back in Premiership action for a second successive season.

Having edged out Dundee to avoid automatic relegation, they have now consigned United to a fourth consecutive season in what will be a highly competitive Championship again after the summer break.

St Mirren manager Oran Kearney has also dismissed speculation he could leave St Mirren this summer.

"Rumours are also going to be there," he tells BBC Scotland. "I made a conscious choice to come across here and try to improve myself as a manager and it's something I want to keep doing."

The small consolation for Dundee United is that they will have a minimum of four potentially money-spinning city derbies to look forward to next season after Dundee's relegation.

It's the first time since season 1995-96 that both have been outside of the top flight.

Dundee United head coach Robbie Neilson is positive about the future of the club despite facing a fourth year in the Championship.

"I think you can see the club's awoken again," he tells BBC Radio Scotland. "We're moving forward in the right direction and Dundee United will be back, it just won't be this year.

"It's the cruellest of ways to lose in a penalty shoot-out. Over the course, the two teams couldn't be separated. We're just disappointed fortune didn't favour us in the penalty shootout.

"At least the boys went up and took them as it can be a very difficult thing to do. At the end of the day, we've failed to do it. Now we look forward to coming back pre-season and making sure we have a good start next season."

St Mirren manager Oran Kearney paid tribute to goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky, whose three saves in the shoot-out proved decisive.

The Czech goalkeeper has been playing through the grief of close friend Josef Sural's death earlier this month and Kearney said: "I fancied it because Vaclav has been outstanding for us.

"He's had a tough couple of months as well and sometimes you just feel things are written in the stars. It's testament to his character.

"I'm delighted for everybody associated with the club. It's been a hell of a season with probably more downs than ups."

That was an eye-wateringly poor shoot-out performance from United, who will have to endure a fourth consecutive season in the second tier and just a fifth since 1960.

In truth, though, St Mirren were the better side in both legs. And, more pressingly, proved far, far more competent from 12 yards.

St Mirren defender Paul McGinn: "For the state we were in at the end of August, to stay up in this league is nothing short of incredible.

"We had a squad suitable for League One in this country and anyone could see that from miles away.

"For the manager to come in and keep this team up is unbelievable. Honestly, I can't believe it."

The pitch is now clear and the snappers are waiting at the tunnel for the St Mirren squad to reappear and huddle behind a big cardboard sign.

Very few Paisley punters have left the ground, even if most are probably in different seats from those they started the shootout in.

An emotional St Mirren captain Stephen McGinn has been speaking to an equally pleased BBC reporter Chick Young.

"I can hardly describe that," he says. "It's been such a hard season.

"It was an absolute car crash the first three months. That's wasn't St Mirren.

"It was tricky today. It was stuttery. But we have turned it round and we kick on from this for a club.

"I am so proud of that as captain."

The St Mirren announcer has twice had to plead with the jubilant home support to clear the pitch to allow a presentation to take place. They are going. Slowly. Bar a few stragglers drunk with a combination of joy and relief.

St Mirren striker Cody Cooke is a relieved man: "For the pens, I was thinking 'don't get to me, don't get to me' and he's [Vaclav Hladky] saved three! Look what it means to everyone. Sunny and now everyone's on the pitch, buzzing.

"Those last 20 minutes are the longest I've ever had, but we got over the line.

"That was the job, we knew we needed to stay in this league and look what it means to everyone."
