The harsh part from our point of view is the fact we lost a goal in the last minute of the first half and in injury time of the second. But that would only have glossed over the fact they had 70% possession and were just far too good for us. I still think the scoreline is a bit disappointing - we didn't work Courtois enough - but qualification won't rest on the results against Belgium

  3. FULL-TIME Belgium 3-0 Scotlandpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

Belgium stay three points clear at the top of Group I thanks to a comprehensive win over Scotland.

Steve Clarke's side, shorn of injured captain Andy Robertson ahead of kick-off, looked to have done their homework well until a moment's hesitation in first-half stoppage time allowed Romelu Lukaku to head the home side into the lead.

Lukaku pounced to score a second after the break after goalkeeper David Marshall pushed away a shot from a Kevin Du Bruyne who looked offside.

There was no doubts about Du Bruyne's stoppage-time finish for the third after James Forrest fumbled a chance to reduce the arrears.

Scotland finish the day fourth in the table, three behind Russia.

    Kevin Du Bruyne

Belgium are not satisfied with a mere victory. They have to finish with a flourish in stoppage time as Kevin Du Bruyne sends a pinpoint low drive into the far corner from 16 yards.

That matches Saturday's 3-0 win against Kazakhstan at the same venue.

  5. Belgian changespublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

    Belgium 2-0 Scotland

Vincent Kompany is replaced in defence with Thomas Vermaelen and that could be the final cap won by the Manchester City man as he leaves to become a player-boss.

Yannick Carrasco comes on for Thorgan Hazard in midfield.

  6. GREAT SAVE!published at 87mins

    Belgium 2-0 Scotland

David Marshall is justifying his recall to the Scotland team and pushes away a powerful drive from Kevin Du Bruyne.

That came after the goalkeeper did the same to deny Eden Hazard moments after that James Forrest miss.

You don't get better opportunities than that. McKenna in nosebleed territory, overruns it, comes to Forrest - just hit it! He tries to come inside and loses possession and the chance is gone

  8. Big chance for Scotlandpublished at 84mins

    Belgium 2-0 Scotland

    Scotland should pull one back.

Ryan Fraser goes on a mazy run before finding big centre-half Scott McKenna of all people racing clear behind the Belgium defence.

Thibaut Courtois does well to palm away, but with the goalkeeper stranded, James Forrest is unable to gather the ball under his feet and the danger is cleared.

    Quote Message

Fraser has added dynamism. He got it on the left, got at his man and it's the first time Courtois has had to make a save. Really good from Fraser. Scotland are caught between a rock and a hard place, being defensive without wanting to lose their main attacking threats, like Fraser

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 79mins

    Belgium 2-0 Scotland

Thibaut Courtois has to make his first save of the night and it has to be a good one to deny Ryan Fraser.

The diminutive winger steps inside his marker and curls a 16-yard drive towards the far corner, but the big goalkeeper manages to claw it away.

  11. Mertens for Tielemanspublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

    Belgium 2-0 Scotland

The first change for Belgium and Dries Mertens, the forward who scored one and set up the other two goals against Kazakhstan on Saturday, replaces Youri Tielemans.

In the first half, Scotland were looking dangerous on the break, but it has taken them until now to make it into the opposing penalty box.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Oliver Burke and then James Forrest are unable to pick out a yellow jersey after making inroads.

It's all gone a bit Kazakhstan since I last told you about this, but what the heck, here it is again.

Any of Scotland's brave lads caught your attention? Fancy giving De Bruyne pelters for being offside in the build up to that goal? Now is your chance...

Kevin De Bruyne finds Eden Hazard stealing in behind the Scottish defence.

The offside flag goes up as the winger's low drive flashes wide of the far post.

The assistant referee was wrong not to flag for Belgium's second goal - and he was wrong to do so on this occasion too!

That second Belgian goal has woken up the home fans. The singing and chanting and drumming is continuous. Despite bravery from Scotland at times, Belgium look comfortable now and you sense the home fans know that.

The travelling Scotland fans aren’t sitting in silence, but gone are the party scenes we saw in the first half.

Well-taken and so clinical when they steal the ball. They get it to Hazard, Scotland get bodies around him, but that frees up De Bruyne. Marshall makes a great save, but Taylor just can't react before Lukaku

    Romelu Lukaku

That looks like game over now.

Eden Hazard teases at the edge of the penalty box before finding Kevin Du Bruyne inside the penalty box.

The Manchester City midfielder looks to have come from an offside position, but play goes on and, when goalkeeper David Marshall can only push clear the resulting shot, Romelu Lukaku reacts quicker than Greg Taylor to prod home his second goal of the game.
