The early minutes of the second half are much the same as the first - Belgium in possession. They're incredible, the movement, the quality, but they're great at lifting and dropping the tempo as well. They usually keep it up, but sometimes they drop it down and then they're away again

  5. Postpublished at 49mins

    Belgium 1-0 Scotland

It should be 2-0 as a Thomas Meunier cross finds Romelu Lukaku, who lost marker Charlie Mulgrew, free 12 yards out, but the big striker makes a mess of his header.

    Belgium 1-0 Scotland

The pattern at the start of the first half is the same as the first and Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall has to get down smartly to stop an Axel Witsel snap shot from 18 yards.

That kamikaze thing Scotland have had over the past few years, where they'd make a colossal mistake - that hasn't been evident tonight. It's just a slight switch-off for the goal, a slight switch-off

I don't think the right thing to do would be to come out all guns blazing, because we could be punished heavily. For 45 minutes, everything was miles better than it's been. A defensive performance away from home - it was structured, organised and we'd had five changes to the XI. There was a plan in place and it seemed to be working. We have to make sure we're still in the game with 15-20 minutes to go, then have a bigger pop

    HT: Russia 1-0 Cyprus

Scotland would probably prefer the Russian advance to be halted out in the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

But Aleksy Ionov's 38th-minute goal has them ahead at half-time against Cyprus.

If tonight's group games stay that way, Russia will be three points clear of the Scots, who would finish the day in fourth behind Kazakhstan.

What a blow for Scotland, but in fairness it was coming. Belgium were knocking on the door only to find Scottish determination keeping out their early efforts.

It was the longest half of football I’ve ever watched.

Hopefully the Scottish heads won’t go down, because they were defending with grit. Clarke’s team look organised, but Belgium just ooze class and maybe no amount of Scottish heart will keep them down.

My hands were never over my eyes, I was never fearing a goal, and the disappointing thing is the goal we actually lost was because Hazard never gave up on the ball and I think a Scotland player, Scott McTominay I think, should have been closer to him, to deny him the chance to dink it into the box. It was a preventable goal. I think Steve Clarke will be disappointed that we switched off for 30 seconds

  14. HALF-TIME Belgium 1-0 Scotlandpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

Scotland were so close to going in at half time level with the world's best team.

But one moment of slackness and the Red Devils have taken advantage.

You have to say, though, that it is a thoroughly deserved lead for the Group I leaders.

    That's Romelu Lukaku's 47th international goal in 81 games.

It's in such a confined space. Eden Hazard is on the by-line and he just clips in a little ball. Lukaku wants it more, powers it in. An incredible goal in an important period of the match. We said Scotland would have to focus for every second – they’ve just been done right before half-time; it’s a bad goal to lose, but Belgium have been knocking at the door

    Romelu Lukaku

Just when you thought Scotland were going to survive until half-time, intense Belgian pressure tells in stoppage time thanks largely to the endeavours of the Hazard brothers.

Thorgan weaves into the penalty box and, when Scott McTominay got a toe to it, the Scotland midfielder's hesitation as he thinks it is going out for a corner allows Eden to gather and find the head of Romelu Lukaku for a simple headed finish.

    It had been coming...

In that attack, Belgium had their left centre-back, Vertonghen, forward at the back post and Alderweireld, the right centre-back, crossing the ball. The wide two are switching, the overlaps, you have just got to be so focused. The movement is just incredible
