Speaking to Sky Sports, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said: "It was a very tough game and I think we showed our character after coming through 120 minutes on Thursday and 120 minutes again today. We showed character and belief again and sometimes it's hard to get up for a game like this but it just shows us where we want to go and how we get better as a team and bounce back."

On his penalty: "I was a bit nervous taking my penalty but I'm not nervous saving them. We practice them consistently and I always pick my spot and always seem to score, but I had never taken one in a real game. We took Harry Kane off so I'm not sure where I would have been in the pecking order but it's what you practice for. It's all about routine and making sure everything goes to perfection.

"The biggest learning curve was Thursday night and I think we needed to see the game out better and get that next goal. But you can only learn by defeats and I think these two games were more valuable than playing qualifying games."

I thought it showed strength for Sterling to take a penalty when he's been unlucky in front of goal all game - and it was a decent pen too.

Ste K: Not surprisingly England triumph having dropped Declan Rice. With Rice England 1-3 Netherlands. Without defensive midfielder Rice, a clean sheet and a victory.

Andrew Knowles: The last time the England team won medals was at the 1968 European Championship, so today's result is more significant than some might say!

Well that was all good fun. Gareth Southgate, shootout king. Quite the turnaround.

It was a decent penalty but it was a good height for Jordan Pickford. But no one really celebrated - they just went over the shake the Swiss players' hands - Jordan Pickford was the only one who looked like he enjoyed it.

Really confident penalty from Eric Dier. I think Yann Sommer stayed up too long there.

What we are learning is that pressure - or the lack of - is a massive part of a shootout...

No problem. Into the bottom right corner - a much better effort than the one which sneaked in and earned England that famous win over Colombia last summer.

    No.

Jordan Pickford barely moves, the pen goes virtually straight down the middle but Pickford had edged to his left and couldn't readjust. Sudden death time.

What a penalty that was. Jordan Pickford with the Cristiano Ronaldo pose before he took it. And he whips it in.
