After a very even first half, Burnley blew Southampton away in 12 second half minutes thanks to a double from Ashley Barnes and a neat finish by Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

What a perfect start for Burnley!

Burnley are happy to see out a more than satisfactory 3-0 win to begin their campaign, and are limiting Southampton while crushing any hopes of a dramatic fightback.

Burnley earn their first corner of the match soon after but the ball just won't fall correctly for James Tarkowski and Saints keeper Angus Gunn is able to gather.

Ward-Prowse stands over the free-kick but runs over the ball to make way for Ryan Betrand who arrows a curling, left-footed shot just over the crossbar.

Nathan Redmond wriggles his way to the edge of the Burnley penalty area and earns a free-kick in a very promising position for Southampton.

Eight of the nine Premier League games between these two has been goalless at half-time, so we shouldn't be too surprised to see this scoreline at this point in proceedings.

Burnley send a free-kick towards the Southampton box from the halfway line, but it comes to nothing at all and that will be that for the first half at Turf Moor.

No goals - following a VAR review for offside after Chris Woods had bundled the ball in for Burnley - but a couple of red card reviews for Che Adams and Johann Berg Gudmundsson have kept things interesting.

Back down the other end and Burnley striker Ashley Barnes takes a wild swing at a cross, leaving the hosts still without a shot on target as half time approaches.

The winger drives into the box from the left wing before unleashing a powerful, rising shot narrowly over Nick Pope's goal.

Excellent play by Redmond who was too quick for the Burnley back line on that occasion.
