That's a lovely finish from Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who breaks clear down the right and curls the ball across Angus Gunn and into the far post from a tight angle.

There's a quick VAR review after Southampton's players felt there was a foul in the build-up, but it stands.

What a start to the season this is turning out to be for Burnley!

A first shot on target and a first goal of the season for Burnley!

It's a really well-taken goal by Ashley Barnes, who brings down Erik Pieters' cross on the edge of the area before firing through the legs of Angus Gunn to send the Clarets ahead.

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

A half-chance for Nathan Redmond, who receives the ball on the edge of the box and attempts to whip a shot into the top corner.

Leaning back, his shot travels well over and the winger looks visibly frustrated that he didn't make more of that.

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Erik Pieters has thumped the ball at Danny Ings at close range and it has taken Ings a little while to get back on his feet after that.

Burnley earn their first corner of the match soon after but the ball just won't fall correctly for James Tarkowski and Saints keeper Angus Gunn is able to gather.

Ward-Prowse stands over the free-kick but runs over the ball to make way for Ryan Betrand who arrows a curling, left-footed shot just over the crossbar.

Made the 500 mile round trip to Turf Moor for an absolute stinker of a first half. Really hope the second half picks up or it's gonna be a long soggy bus back to the village.

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Eight of the nine Premier League games between these two has been goalless at half-time, so we shouldn't be too surprised to see this scoreline at this point in proceedings.

    Not surprised, just disappointed.

A slow start to the second half, as new Burnley signing Erik Pieters fires high and wide from a long way out.

  18. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Burnley send a free-kick towards the Southampton box from the halfway line, but it comes to nothing at all and that will be that for the first half at Turf Moor.

No goals - following a VAR review for offside after Chris Woods had bundled the ball in for Burnley - but a couple of red card reviews for Che Adams and Johann Berg Gudmundsson have kept things interesting.

Back down the other end and Burnley striker Ashley Barnes takes a wild swing at a cross, leaving the hosts still without a shot on target as half time approaches.

  20. CLOSE!published at 43 mins

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Nathan Redmond with the best chance of the first half!

The winger drives into the box from the left wing before unleashing a powerful, rising shot narrowly over Nick Pope's goal.

Excellent play by Redmond who was too quick for the Burnley back line on that occasion.
