    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Southampton have had five shots to Burnley's one so far, but just one of those has been on target while the Clarets are yet to test Saints keeper Angus Gunn.

Both are showing intent, but neither side has been able to produce any quality moves so far.

At the moment, you feel just one could be worth all three points in this one.

  4. No red cardpublished at 31 mins

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Che Adams survives a video assistant referee review for a potential red card, as he arrived late for a challenge on Ben Mee.

It was high and a bit reckless from Adams, but there didn't seem to be any intent and his game can continue...

Now then, Southampton's new signing Che Adams could be in trouble here...

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

The tables have turned since the early stages and it's Burnley who are looking the more comfortable in possession as we reach the half hour mark at Turf Moor.

  7. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

The game and atmosphere has settled down again after Burnley's disallowed goal.

The incident has certainly woken the Clarets up however, and a good few minutes of play for Burnley leads to Johann Berg Gudmundsson to fire narrowly wide of the target from the edge of the area.

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

A bit of a weird one that Chris Woods 'goal'.

Nobody in the stadium thought it was going to count following the assistant referee's flag for offside, but Graham Scott checked nonetheless despite already blowing his whistle and stopping the play.

This is going to be an interesting season.

    Goal? No goal?

Chris Wood has the ball in the net for Burnley, but referee Graham Scott had blown for offside a good few seconds prior.

Southampton defender Jack Stephens had slipped in the build-up to allow Burnley through on goal, and the incident was sent to the video assistant referees who uphold the 'no goal' decision.

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan is watching in the stands at Turf Moor, with the Old Trafford side not in action until tomorrow afternoon.

He doesn't look too impressed here, but I think this has been lively enough to maintain attention so far.

  11. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

The rain, which subsided for kick-off, has returned in Burnley and has oiled the pitch somewhat.

Gunn certainly won't be the last to take a slide today.

Meanwhile, Burnley are growing into the match and are showing intent on the counter at every opportunity - though there have been no real chances for Chris Wood or Ashley Barnes so far.

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

    Oops!

Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn slips as he runs to collect the ball on the edge of the area, with the home support convinced Gunn breached his penalty area in doing so.

That one won't go to VAR though, and play resumes with Gunn left only slightly red-faced...

  13. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Southampton, after a first full pre-season with Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, look comfortable in possession and lively in attack in the early stages at Turf Moor.

A confident start by the visitors.

  14. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

Southampton have not won on any of their last five visits to Turf Moor, while neither side has scored more than one goal in any of the past five meetings...

The Saints have the first sight at goal today as summer signing Che Adams rushes in to meet Yan Valery's cross at the back post, but the 22-year-old's outstretched foot sends the ball narrowly wide of the target.

"He's one of our own" the home support chant in the direction of summer signing Jay Rodriguez, though the former Burnley and Southampton striker must settle for a start on the bench today.

The crowd are up for it, the players look ready and we're almost set at Turf Moor!

    Burnley v Southampton (15:00 BST)

Burnley boss Sean Dyche: "I think we have made some good signings, albeit not thrashing around the money again.

"The squad has a rounded feel to it and we hope that bodes well with that competitive element in the group."

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: "I think we had a good basis last season and built it up, now we try to improve a few steps.

"The pre-season games were positive, which is nice to see, but nobody knows exactly how good we are. Now, it's about getting results."

  18. 'Not an easy afternoon for Saints'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    Burnley v Southampton (15:00 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson
Ex-Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

The Premier League is back, and so is Lawro with his weekly predictions. Here's what he's expecting from this one...

Neither of these teams have done too much transfer business over the summer, although Burnley will be boosted by their deadline-day signing of Danny Drinkwater.

Burnley were affected by the Europa League at the start of last season but I am expecting them to be a lot more like their usual selves straight away this time.

Southampton will be up against their former striker Jay Rodriguez, who rejoined the Clarets from West Brom in the summer, and I don't think they will have an easy afternoon.

    Prediction: 2-1

  19. A shiny new seasonpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 10 August 2019

    Burnley v Southampton (15:00 BST)

Burnley finished 15th last term, one point and one place above Southampton - with the Saints ending the campaign five points clear of the relegation spots.

It was a season of two halves for both clubs, as Burnley shook off their Europa League qualifying hangover after Christmas and Ralph Hasenhuttl's December arrival lifted the gloom at St Mary's.

Scoring 10 goals each in their final three pre-season matches, there's plenty to be optimistic about in either dugout as kick-off edges closer.
