This is the first competitive meeting between these two sides at U21 level since October 2010.

Back then the two sides met in a play-off match for the 2011 Euro U21 Championships. England won the first leg 2-1 courtesy of goals from Jordan Henderson and Chris Smalling before a goalless draw in the second leg ensured the Three Lions went through on aggregate.

Romania have a player who will be very familiar to a number of England players.

Defender Alex Pascanu is on the books of Leicester, meaning he will come up against club team-mates James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, Demarai Gray and Hamza Choudhury.

"I have dreamed of playing against England since I was little and I hope to win," he said. “We feel very good at this moment, the encouragement and praise motivates us even more."

The other England-based player in Romania's squad is defensive midfielder Tudor Baluta, who plays for Brighton.

If you are the wrong side of 30 like myself then one of the surnames in the Romania line-up will prompt pangs of nostalgia for 90s football.

I'm talking about Hagi. Ianis Hagi is the son of Barcelona and Real Madrid legend Gheorghe Hagi.

Hagi senior is Romania's all-time top scorer with 35 goals and memorably helped them reach the quarter finals of the 1994 World Cup.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd makes several tweaks to the side that lost to France.

Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury is suspended after his red card against the French, while Phil Foden, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Ryan Sessegnon and Dominic Solanke also miss out.

Jonjoe Kenny, Harvey Barnes, Kieran Dowell, Mason Mount and Dominc Calvert-Lewin all come in.

England XI: Henderson, Kenny, Clarke-Salter, Tomori, Dasilva, Barnes, Dowell, Maddison, Mount, Calvert-Lewin, Gray

Subs: Wan-Bissaka, Solanke, Foden, Sessegnon, Gunn, Kelly, Konsa, Gibbs-White, Nelson, Woodman, Abraham

There was an air of familiarity about England's performance against France in their Euro Under-21 opener.

They dominated early doors, took the lead before collapsing in the second half, conceding twice late on with a couple of defensive howlers thrown into the mix for good measure.

The defeat makes things simple for this afternoon's game against Romania. They really need a win to keep alive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
