  1. Candeias doesn't make the cutpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 9 July 2019

    St Joseph's v Rangers (16:55)

Rangers winger Daniel Candeias, who made more than 50 appearances last season, did not travel, since the visitors are restricted to a squad of 22 for their Europa League ties.

Clubs can name up to 25 players but that is reduced if they do not have enough "club-trained or locally-trained" players.

"It's just a numbers game," said manager Steven Gerrard yesterday, who has included Scott Arfield, who has just returned from international duty with Canada and is skipping the first leg.

"I'm not going to make a big thing of it," Gerrard added. "It is just the way it is when you have big numbers, big squads, big players and competition for places."

Graham Dorrans, Jason Holt, Joe Dodoo, Eros Grezda, Kyle Lafferty, Glenn Middleton and Ryan Hardie are others not to make the cut, while full-back Jon Flanagan is recovering from a hernia operation.

Rangers are going to have a lot of the ball. They need to go and impose themselves on the game. Once the whistle goes, get about your business and get a result

  3. Jones & Ojo start for Rangerspublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 9 July 2019

    St Joseph's v Rangers (16:55)

    Rangers

There are starts for summer signings Jordan Jones and Sheyi Ojo, who will play wide either side of striker Jermain Defoe.

Last season's top-scorer Alfredo Morelos is fit enough for a substitute role, having been rested for Sunday's friendly win over Oxford with a slight groin complaint. He is joined on the bench by new arrivals Joe Aribo, Greg Stewart and George Edmundson.

Rangers: McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Katic, Barisic, Kamara, Davis, Jack, Ojo, Jones, Defoe.

Substitutes: Foderingham, Aribo, Halliday, Stewart, Edmundson, Docherty, Morelos.

  4. Holiday weather as business starts for Rangerspublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 9 July 2019

    St Joseph's v Rangers (16:55)

The Rangers players will need the factor 30 this afternoon. It's a dreich, wet day across large parts of Scotland but the sun's out in Gibraltar.

There's barely a cloud in the sky across the gateway to the Mediterranean, with the temperature a very pleasant 26C. Pleasant for watching football and drinking beer, that is. Running about at full pelt, not so much.

It's going to make the artificial pitch sticky and slow but that's something the visitors will have prepared for.

  5. Here we go againpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 9 July 2019

Seriously? The football season is starting?

The dust has just settled on the Women's World Cup, we're only into the Wimbledon quarter-finals and The Open is still nine days away, yet here we go again.

Rangers are first up as they take on St Joseph's in Gibraltar and that Europa League qualifier is promptly followed by Celtic's visit to Sarajevo in the scramble for Champions League places.

Have you been climbing the walls waiting for the rollercoaster to start again or could you have done with a few more weeks off? Either way, strap yourself in and get ready for the ride. Kick off is only half an hour away.
