Laura, you seem intent at trying to portray Derby fans as being distraught ("read it and weep, Derby fans") at the news. But that's quite the assumption to make and doesn't reflect reality. We had a manager who took us from 6th, to 6th. Yes, we played some good football and had a good season but we were also woefully inconsistent. Frank showed nothing to suggest he was ready for a job like this but these things happen. Most Derby fans wanted Frank to stay, of course we did. But I don't think there will be many (if any) tears shed. As it turns out, we've got £7million (for Frank and his team) and are about to appoint, in Phillip Cocu, are better, more proven, more experienced manager. Someone far more qualified for the job than Frank, and actually, someone far more qualified for the Chelsea job. We don't begrudge Frank for leaving, it's his dream job. But we find the way the media, Chelsea and some of Frank's family (Harry?) have handled it to be disrespectful. I think I speak for just about every Derby fan in saying that I am GLAD we can now finally move on. And we've traded in Frank for a better manager. We're onto bigger and better things. So, thanks, Frank. But we won't be 'weeping': we're too busy being cuckoo for Cocu! Thank u, next.

    Ben, Derby

Well, that's me well and truly shot down. Cheers, Ben!

  8. 'Super Frank's' Stamford Bridge connectionpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 4 July 2019

    Lampard appointed as Chelsea boss

Lampard joined Chelsea from boyhood club West Ham for a fee of £11m in 2001.

He won a Champions League and a Europa League at the club, while also helping them to win three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups.

Chelsea's title win in 2004-05 was their first in half a century and Lampard scored 13 league goals that season, including both in a 2-0 victory at Bolton that sealed the top-flight crown.

He scored 10 or more Premier League goals in 10 successive seasons for Chelsea and is the club's all-time record goalscorer with 211.

Lampard left Stamford Bridge in June 2014 and had a stint at Manchester City, where he scored six goals in 32 appearances.

He then joined New York City in Major League Soccer in the US, making his debut in August 2015, before ending his 21-year professional playing career in 2017.

Lampard won 106 England caps after making his international debut in 1999 and went on to score 29 goals for the Three Lions.

He appeared in three World Cups and one European Championships.

Dream appointment and nothing to lose. Develop youth, get them playing decent football and have a fair stab at the cups and leagues. The dynasty has begun.

  10. A new focus on youth?published at 10:59 British Summer Time 4 July 2019

    Lampard appointed as Chelsea boss

Christian Pulisic, a £58m signing from Borussia Dortmund, has replaced talisman Eden Hazard but Lampard will be forced to work with limited resources in his first season after the club was put under a transfer embargo.

Chelsea have a plethora of players on loan at Premier League and Championship clubs, including Kurt Zouma at Everton and promotion-winning Tammy Abraham at Aston Villa, and many are expected to be recalled.

Lampard also worked closely with two Chelsea players at Derby, both Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori featuring heavily in his spell at Pride Park.

"There's a nice balance of the older and younger players," said Lampard.

"I'm excited about the current crop of youngsters, especially seeing the work that has gone into the academy over the years.

"I've seen the players - I worked with Mason Mount last year and you can see their attitude, how they hold themselves and their manners.

"I want to dangle the carrot and ask them can you perform? Can you get in the team?"

The new manager will have to succeed where his predecessor failed in giving sufficient game time to Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, two of Chelsea's most promising youngsters.

Midfielder Loftus-Cheek has recently agreed a new five-year deal at his boyhood club, but Lampard will have to convince Hudson-Odoi to remain in west London despite ongoing interest from German giants Bayern Munich.

  13. Pat Nevin hopes legend is not tarnishedpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 4 July 2019

    Lampard appointed as Chelsea boss

Considering many people (though not me) thought last season was a failure, do you really see Chelsea this time around getting third in the Premier League, winning a major European trophy and just missing out on a domestic trophy against Manchester City by the width of a post?

If Frank "only" got another top-four finish I think that would be astounding, but Maurizio Sarri was roundly criticised for doing much better than that while completely overhauling the team's style. The standards demanded at Chelsea are that high.

Is it disrespectful to question whether Frank is making the right decision by taking this job so early in his managerial career? If things go wrong at the start it can destroy your chances going forward. Just look at the stick Gary Neville took after his stint at Valencia went belly up. Sir Alex Ferguson was sacked from his first job at St Mirren - although he did bounce back quite well!

You have to be good, but you also have to have good timing in management. Frank had the best timing I have ever seen in a footballer when it came to arriving in the box, but the timing of his arrival as Chelsea manager could have been better, even if it is through no fault of his own.

I think it's a good appointment for Chelsea. The club has had a recent history of players perhaps having too much power and I think that stops with Lampard in charge. The fans loyalty to Lampard will see the players vilified if they try to undermine him. With Hazard gone and a transfer embargo in place, I wouldn't expect any miracles from Frank but this could be a great opportunity to get some managerial experience under his belt, the board and the fans will need to keep realistic expectations.

  16. 'One of the most talented young coaches in the game'published at 10:31 British Summer Time 4 July 2019

    Lampard appointed as Chelsea boss

The appointment comes nine days after Derby gave Lampard permission to talk to Chelsea and 18 days after Sarri left Stamford Bridge.

Lampard is the 10th full-time manager appointed by Roman Abramovich since he bought the club in 2003.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said Lampard's Championship play-off final appearance with Derby demonstrated that he is "one of the most talented young coaches in the game".

"It gives us great pleasure to welcome Frank back to Chelsea as head coach," she said. "Frank possesses fantastic knowledge and understanding of the club."

Derby assistant manager Jody Morris and first-team coach Chris Jones have also joined Lampard at Stamford Bridge, while former team-mate Petr Cech was appointed as technical advisor last month.

  18. Chelsea backed to finish in top fourpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 4 July 2019

    Lampard appointed as Chelsea boss

Chelsea are now being heavily backed to finish in the top four.

In the past hour, 36% of all bets in the market have backed the Blues to retain a Champions League place, despite being hit with a transfer ban.

Lampard's new side are 5-4 to do so, actually making them fifth favourites to finish in the top four.

That's behind favourites Man City (1-33), Liverpool (1-8), Tottenham (8-13) and Manchester United (6-5).

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson said: "Lampard is a Chelsea legend on the pitch - can he repeat similar heroics from the dugout?

"Chelsea fans will have to temper their expectations, though, with the west London club priced up at a whopping 40-1 to win the Premier League next year."

I really hope he does well. But coming into the club without the ability to sign anyone for two transfer windows... who does that? I'm a Chelsea fan, but really wanted Lampard to get some experience under his belt before being chewed up by the Chelsea machine.

    Kieren, Newport

Too soon in my opinion, club legend theres no doubting that. What happens 10 games in and things are not working out. So much to loose for frank in his early managerial career.

    Anon

As a neutral I hope Frank is given time. With the current crop of youngsters they could be a great side in a couple of years. I wouldn't see finishing 5th, 6th or even 7th this season as a failure. Abramovich would of course think differently though...
