Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is likely to be among the top scorers in the Championship but will their defence dent their promotion hopes?

Gary Watson: Leeds, Fulham and West Brom from the Championship. Portsmouth, Peterborough and Ipswich from League One. Bradford, Plymouth, Newport and Leyton Orient from League Two!

Paul Holding: West Brom are a striker short of a top-six finish.

Gareth Colley: Why is everyone going on about Fulham to go straight back up? Have they signed anyone who will fix their leaky defence? If they lose Mitrovic for any period of time then they've had it.

We've had a lot of shouts for Fulham to go up from the Championship but, as Gareth says, have they done enough to fix a defence that conceded a league-high 81 goals in the Premier League last season?

Enjoyed it so far? We have so much more from where that came from.

  4. Warnock targeting ninth promotionpublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

Neil Warnock says this season will be his last as a manager. Will he achieve a record ninth promotion before calling it a day?

"It's pointless being here if there's no chance of promotion," said the 70-year-old, whose side dropped out of the Premier League last season.

"That's why I say we will have to have a look at it at Christmas and see where we are.

"That's the one reason I came here, because I thought I could get my eighth promotion and call it a day. And here I am talking about a ninth."

  7. Can Huddersfield 'pick themselves up'?published at 11:28 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Stephen Kelly
Former Reading and Fulham defender told BBC Radio 5 Live

Huddersfield could be on a bit of a downer after what happened last season.

I don’t know whether they can pick themselves up after that.

You can listen to BBC Radio 5 Live's 90-minute EFL preview show on BBC Sounds.

  8. A 'magical' farewell to Griffin Park?published at 11:23 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

This season will be Brentford's last at Griffin Park before moving to a new stadium, and the Bees want to leave on a high.

Head coach Thomas Frank said: "It is the farewell season and we need to do everything we can to make this last season magical.

"We need to give the fans some fantastic experiences and joy at Griffin Park."

Sam Fathers: Is there a side that the neutral wants to do less well than Salford? Really hoping for strong seasons from Plymouth (promotion) Charlton (not relegation) and Leeds (automatic promotion). West Ham fan.

Robin Goch: Seems the obvious picks but teams to go up have to be Fulham, Portsmouth & Mansfield. Anything less than that for those teams and it’s a season of failure.

Todd Brooks: I would say that Leeds, Fulham & West Brom will be promoted in the Championship Portsmouth, Sunderland & Ipswich will be promoted in League One & Bradford, Plymouth, Salford & Leyton Orient in League Two.

Salford City’s famous owners will all miss the club’s first Football League game against Stevenage on Saturday.

Under the part ownership of former Manchester United stars Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham - who took a 10% stake in the club last season - Salford have risen from the Northern Premier League First Division to League Two in just over five years.

But for either work or family reasons, none will be at the Peninsula Stadium for their club’s historic opening match as a Football League club.

The club, which had attendances of around 100 at the time of the ‘Class of 92’ takeover in 2014 have sold 1900 season tickets.

It is anticipated Salford’s owners will be present for the EFL Cup first round tie against Leeds on 13 August.

  12. The lowdown on Crewe Alexandrapublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Lee Blakeman
    BBC Radio Stoke

Crewe were dominant at home last season, with a record which saw them finish just six points off the League Two play-offs. The key this time around will be replicating their home form on the road.

However, following their summer transfer business, questions remain over their strength in depth, with seven players leaving and only Daniel Powell and Olly Lancashire coming in.

Defensive injuries have left them short for cover at the back, while Chris Porter remains their only recognised striker.

Reinforcements will be key if David Artell's side are to push on from last season’s hard work.

  13. A fresh start for Oldham Athleticpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Mike Minay
    BBC Radio Manchester

It’s been a big summer of change at Oldham. A new manager, Frenchman Laurent Banide, and a raft of new players have entered through the doors at Boundary Park.

It’s been a two-sided pre-season too - the club had a good PR booster with 10 days in Morocco, but since returning home have been hampered by results against National League opposition, losing to Stockport and Halifax.

How much do you read into this? Hard to say. Overall, I’d say this could be a difficult season for the Latics - but I hope I’m proved wrong.

  17. Will Fulham bounce straight back to the Premier League?published at 10:51 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Nick Godwin
    BBC Radio London

This time last year, Fulham were almost overrun by new arrivals. Slavisa Jokanovic didn't know his strongest side and their Premier League return never really got started.

This year should be very different. Scott Parker has been given the time to properly settle in as manager, while the spine of the team that took Fulham up two seasons ago has been retained.

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Tom Cairney have pledged their futures to the club, while goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and midfielders Stefan Johansen and Kevin McDonald, all sidelined last term, will have bigger roles in the months to come.

Two years ago, Fulham tore through the Championship by playing a refreshing brand of daring football, with the crowning glory at Wembley in the play-off final.

If they can recapture some of that style and purpose this season, they will be serious challengers.

  18. What can we expect from Wigan?published at 10:47 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Paul Rowley
    BBC Radio Manchester

This will be only Wigan's seventh season in the second tier (surprising considering they spent eight years in the Premier League), but they've never had a middling campaign at this level.

They're either fighting for promotion or trying to avoid the drop, with last season's 18th-place finish seen as an achievement considering they’d been relegated in their previous two seasons in the Championship.

Thirteen players have left, including the enigmatic Nick Powell and player-of-the-season Reece James, who has returned to Chelsea.

Six have come in, including lively winger Jamal Lowe from Paul Cook's old club Portsmouth.

A repeat of last season's excellent home form should again keep them up, but I’d imagine most 'Tics fans will be content with survival.

Which EFL clubs will be promoted this season?

    Joe LolleyImage source, Getty Images

Mark Whittle: I honestly think we, Nottingham Forest, have a decent chance of promotion (again...). Lamouchi seems to have steadied the ship, some astute signings have been made, and IF he's actually given the season? Stranger things have happened...

Joe: I am buzzing to get going again. As a Leeds fan and going through the mess of what happened with us three months ago, I hope that we can improve and go the one step further this time. But with this league, it’s so unpredictable, a new rollercoaster ride. I’m ready!

Keith Chapman (Salford fan): League Two - Winners: Newport County / Auto promoted: Forest Green Rovers and Scunthorpe / Play-off winners: Salford City.

Cliff Gibbs: After the thrill of winning the League One play-off final - Charlton Athletic fans are now disconsolate. An owner that wants to sell but prices the club too high and doesn't care about results on the pitch... desperate times heading into the new season.

Edward Watts (Derby fan): 1. Fulham 2. Derby 3. West Brom. Derby under Cocu will be a force this season. Some good signings look likely to be coming in especially Clarke and Bielik. Hopeful for a strong season.

  20. 'There are significant challenges for me'published at 10:37 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Mark RobinsImage source, Getty Images

Coventry City boss Mark Robins has been talking to the press before their 'home' League One game against Southend tomorrow.

The Sky Blues are playing their home games at Birmingham's St Andrew's stadium this season after failing to agree a deal to stay at the Ricoh Arena.

"We've just got to get on with it and play the hand we're dealt," Robins told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.

"The people at Birmingham have been brilliant, really welcoming and accommodating so I think there's every reason to be excited and look forward.

"There are significant challenges for me as a manager, for as a football club, logistically, through trying to get people to watch us and be interested in what we're doing."
