    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

Portsmouth's Andrew Cannon charges towards goal inside the penalty area, cutting in from the left, but Birmingham's Wes Harding produces an excellent sliding tackle to stop him getting a shot away.

  2. Postpublished at 71 mins

    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

This is possibly Birmingham's best move of the second half, as good work from Steve Seddon down the left presents Odin Bailey with a chance to shoot from the edge of the area, but the youngster's first-time effort goes over the bar.

  3. Postpublished at 70 mins

    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

Portsmouth are in total control here and they've looked really assured tonight.

In particular, Ellis Harrison will have impressed the home fans on his first competitive appearance at Fratton Park since signing from Ipswich for an undisclosed fee in June.

    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

The visitors don't have any 'experienced' options to choose from now to try and change this game. The oldest outfield player on their bench tonight is 21 - the other five outfielders are all teenagers.

Keeper Connal Trueman is the old wise head on the bench at the comparatively-ancient age of 23.

I think it's safe to say visiting boss Pep Clotet has decided that Saturday's game at home to Bristol City is more important than this one...

  5. CLOSE!published at 65 mins

    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

It should be 4-0. Birmingham are all at sea at the back, but Ellis Harrison's close-range shot is saved and then Lee Brown misses the target from five yards on the rebound!

    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

Birmingham midfielder Charlie Lakin makes a good run in to the box but he loses his balance right at the end of his burst in to the area and it comes to nothing.

  8. Postpublished at 59 mins

    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

Birmingham could well be down to 10 men here, as Geraldo Bajrami - who has already been booked - brings down Ellis Harrison, halton a Pompey attack. I think the Albania youth international slips.

The referee agrees it was unintentional and the defender escapes without a second yellow. Some of the Pompey players are asking the question - should he have gone off?

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 56 mins

    Portsmouth 3-0 Birmingham

Birmingham boss Pep Clotet brings on 19-year-old forward Odin Bailey for his debut for the club, replacing Dan Crowley up top just behind 16-year-old Jude Bellingham.

Within seconds of Ronan Curtis heading wide, Ellis Harrison heads in his second of the night for the home side, and now they'll surely be going through to the second round.

It's a well-placed header from the far post that goes in off the inside of the opposite post and he's delighted, on his home debut for the club.

  11. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Portsmouth 2-0 Birmingham

The Birmingham fans behind the goal their side are attacking in this second half haven't had much to cheer about yet.

Portsmouth win a free-kick in a dangerous position on the left and it's whipped in well, but Birmingham's Jake Clarke-Salter heads it clear.

Damian Humphreys: Some will say Pompey will go up as Champions after that first half... But we won the EFL Trophy last year beating reserve teams, so why not.

Birmingham's Issac Vassell is reportedly close to a move to Cardiff for around £3m, according to the Mirror, having travelled to tonight's game but then having been withdrawn from the squad late on.

The Blues may already have brought in his replacement though, having signed Spanish striker Alvaro Gimenez from Almeria for around £1.4m earlier today - you can read about that confirmed deal here.

  18. HT: Portsmouth 2-0 Birminghampublished at 20:43 British Summer Time 6 August 2019

In case you're just checking your phone, goals from Ellis Harrison and Ben Close have given Portsmouth a comfortable 2-0 lead against a youthful Birmingham side in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Debutant 16-year-old forward Jude Bellingham has shown some decent touches for the visitors, as he breaks their club record as their youngest ever player - breaking former England striker Trevor Francis' record from 1970 - but there's been little else for the West Midlands club to be excited about so far.

  19. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45+5 mins

    Portsmouth 2-0 Birmingham

There's the half-time whistle and League One Portsmouth are well on course to knock out Championship Birmingham City as it stands.

The visitors may well be regretting their nine changes, and they've only really got youngsters to choose from on the bench as well, so they can't exactly 'call in the cavalry' in the second half.

  20. CLOSE!published at 45+4 mins

    Portsmouth 2-0 Birmingham

Portsmouth counter attack very well and they almost add a third, but Ronan Curtis's long-range strike bounces just wide of the post. David Stockdale was scrambling.
