More misery for poor Stoke fans, barely minutes gone and they're a goal down already.

Scott Malone checked the ball back to Kieran Dowell and when he swung the ball in, Martyn Waghorn got ahead of his marker to turn it in.

    Rams up and running.

I know this is not new news but, what a mascot Crusty the Pie is!?

    Mine's a balti, please.

I once took a chicken balti pie home from Valley Parade, as the first one I had was so good. I protected it like a mother would her new-born baby.

Even better, at the old Ninian Park, they had a guest pie?! Was a majestic steak and ale, if I remember rightly.

  4. Cosmopolitan feel to a midlands derbypublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Nott'm Forest v Birmingham (15:00 BST)

    Lukas JutkiewiczImage source, Getty Images

Sabri Lamouchi and Pep Clotet will add a little cosmopolitan glamour to this meeting of East and West (midlands) at the City Ground between Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City.

Lamouchi has been tasked with turning promise and resources into success at Forest, where many have tried and failed, and so far he's got a win, a draw and a loss from three league and cup games.

Clotet has carried on the good work of Garry Monk - his long-term ally - as the Blues have made an unbeaten start to the league campaign.

However, they've not won at Forest since December 2014.

  5. Can Preston change the record?published at 14:52 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Swansea v Preston

    Gareth Vincent
BBC Sport Wales at the Liberty Stadium

Swansea City take on Preston North End at the Liberty Stadium today and the home side ought to be full of confidence.

After all, they have lost only once on their own patch in 2019 - and that was in contentious circumstances against the mighty Manchester City.

Preston, meanwhile, have not won in 18 visits to Swansea since victory at Vetch Field in 1961.

Can Alex Neil's team change that record this afternoon?

  6. Thirty four and a bit miles...published at 14:50 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Stoke v Derby (15:00 BST)

Stoke and Derby players scuffleImage source, Getty Images

Both these sides have rivalries of their own but with just under 35 miles between the two cities, there will be a little bit of feeling up on the hill at Stoke City's Bet365 Stadium.

Yep, one of football's most Ice Station Zebra-esque grounds, where the wind whistles through even on the warmest of days, should find some heat from the stands as the Boothen End serenades those Rams who have chugged along the A50 for some Saturday afternoon frolics.

Stoke have a decent recent record against Derby - unbeaten in four league games and their last home loss to the Rams came in the League Cup, back in the days when Paul Jewell was boss at Pride Park.

The pressure is on the hosts to extend that run, as they remain winless in the Championship so far this season, while Derby are unbeaten so far under former Barcelona and Netherlands star Phillip Cocu.

    Wigan v Leeds (15:00 BST)

Paul Cook and Marcelo BielsaImage source, Getty Images

I don't know whether you've caught any of the slickly-produced 'Take Me Home' Leeds United documentary which has just been released on a popular video streaming website, but I caught a bit recently and it was an enjoyable watch.

Anyway, the reason I mentioned it is there is a very interesting scene from half-time in the Leeds-Wigan game, where the narrator - Hollywood star and South Sydney Rabbitohs/Leeds United nut Russell Crowe no less - euphemistically refers to Paul Cook being 'incensed' as he delivers an expletive-laden rant at the referee.

Whatever the case, today's game gives us a chance to see two of the Championship's liveliest characters on the touchline.

Leeds have picked up where they left off last season and have four points to their name in their early bid for promotion, while Wigan have been a mixed bag in beating Cardiff impressively but well beaten by Preston.

Wigan and Leeds, and I didn't even mention rugby league. Until now.

  8. Hatters turning back the clockpublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

Luton v West Brom (15:00 BST)

Luton players celebrate a goalImage source, Getty

In an age of concrete megabowls there is something quite nostalgic about Kenilworth Road, with its compact lay-out and buzzy atmosphere. What it lacks in refinement, it gives back in terms of character - and for that I mean a lack of legroom and plenty of singing.

Luton fans could be forgiven for thinking they've travelled back in time too, as the calibre of the clientele making the trip to Bedfordshire has been a bit more upmarket this season than they had become accustomed to in recent years. From Hayes & Yeading and Tamworth 10 years ago... to Middlesbrough and West Brom.

The Albion are the latest star-packed ex-Premier League side to turn up, the first league meeting between the sides in 12 years.

Slaven Bilic's side have four points from six so far, while Luton held Boro to a 3-3 opening night draw - and their boss Graeme Jones will know the Baggies well as he was assistant there last term.

  9. Addicks enjoying life in second tierpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Barnsley v Charlton (15:00 BST)

Ben Purrington celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Charlton have looked quite at home in the Championship so far this season after three campaigns away, as Lee Bowyer continues to work his magic.

Wins against Blackburn and Stoke leave the Addicks enjoying the rarified air of the top two even at this early stage, and not even an EFL Cup exit by Forest Green on penalties has quelled the upbeat mood.

Their opponents Barnsley - also promoted last season - made an equally flying start with victory against Fulham in their opener but a derby defeat by Sheffield Wednesday and an EFL Cup thrashing by Carlisle have followed that.

The latter was Barnsley's first home loss under Daniel Stendel in 14 months as boss, which tells you just how tough a trip Oakwell will be this afternoon.

  10. Siewert out as Terriers tumblepublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Friday: Huddersfield 1-2 Fulham

Agony for Jan Siewert and ecstasy for Scott ParkerImage source, Getty Images

We have had our first sacking of the season in the EFL as Huddersfield ended Jan Siewert's tenure at the John Smith's Stadium after one win in seven months. (Sol Campbell left Macclesfield of his own accord...)

Yes, that duration is slightly skewed by the summer break but it's a pretty damning statistic, and his 19-game stint includes a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League One side Lincoln in midweek.

In the end Ivan Cavaleiro's curling belter was the nail in the coffin, winning it for the Cottagers after Huddersfield striker Karlan Grant had cancelled out Aleksandar Mitrovic's opener.

Here's the report if you want to know more.

Does anyone really look at league tables at this time of year?!

Well, if they do, they'll see that Sunderland have moved up to fourth with that victory, while Portsmouth slip down to 11th. Just the 43 games to go for both teams, mind you.

Nonetheless, it's time we started focusing on the wave of fixtures coming your way in half an hour. To talk you through the build-up, I'll hand you over to Matt Newsum...

  17. 'I was in the right place at the right time'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    FT: Sunderland 2-1 Portsmouth

Sunderland goalscorer Chris Maguire told Sky Sports:

"Like last season, they'll be one of the teams that'll be there or thereabouts like ourselves. They're the wins we've got to get. We need to make this a place people will be scared of coming.

"You want to be scoring goals and I was in the right place at the right time."

It's all over and Sunderland have bagged their first League One win of the season.

Portsmouth, to their credit, played some stylish football at times but Jordan Willis and Chris Maguire's first half double gives the three points to the hosts.

    Sunderland 2-1 Portsmouth

It's just not going Portsmouth's way right now, despite their dominance with the ball.

Marcus Harness, who's had a cracking game, can't quite find a way past a resolute Sunderland defence.

Four minutes stoppage time has been added on.
