  1. Do miracles come true?published at 23:18 British Summer Time 13 August 2019

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

Cluj boss Dan Petrescu said last week it would take a "miracle" for his side to knock Celtic out.

Miraculous? Maybe ridiculous is a better assessment of the bedlam that played out in Glasgow tonight.

Utterly maddening for Celtic, who miss out on all the riches and all the prestige that comes with dining at Europe's top table. That's two years running they've been dumped out in the qualifiers and it will hurt all the more that they were architects of their own downfall.

We've got reaction from Neil Lennon online tonight, we'll have more from the Celtic camp tomorrow, and former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs will be live on Good Morning Scotland at 08:25 BST to discuss where it all went wrong.

For now, this rather chaotic live text is over. Thanks for your company tonight... I'm off for a lie down.

  2. What about the dreaded coefficient?published at 23:18 British Summer Time 13 August 2019

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

The good news for Scottish football is that as long as two teams reach the Europa League group stage, the coefficient won't take a hit.

Thanks to their performances in the Europa League, Rangers earned just 0.5 fewer coefficient points than Celtic last season. And only nine countries did better than Scotland in 2018-19.

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

"Suicidal" defending, "crazy" goals conceded, "only ourselves to blame".

If you missed his post-match assessment earlier, here's what Celtic boss Neil Lennon had to say about his side's performance.

  5. The rankings don't make for pretty reading...published at 22:56 British Summer Time 13 August 2019

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

Prior to tonight's game, Uefa had Celtic ranked 47th, with Cluj miles below them on 288th. By any standards, that's a significant upset.

In their past 10 attempts, Celtic have made the Champions League group stage on four occasions.

  7. What next for Celtic?published at 22:48 British Summer Time 13 August 2019

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

Well, after tonight's grievous disappointment, Celtic simply must qualify for the Europa League group stage.

They managed that feat last term under Brendan Rodgers after dropping out of the Champions League qualifiers thanks to defeat by AEK Athens.

They're up against Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova, or more likely, Sweden's AIK over two legs for a place in the group stage.

Those teams are champions of their respective nations and meet in the second leg of their qualifier tomorrow, with the Swedes 2-1 up.

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

Celtic weren't the only big fish to be plucked from the Champions League pond tonight.

Porto, and Dynamo Kyiv are also out, and Ajax survived a serious scare against PAOK.

  9. The upshot?published at 22:43 British Summer Time 13 August 2019

    FT: Celtic 3-4 Cluj

Dejection and anger for Celtic and their fans.

Four goals conceded, at home, against a side they were expected to dispatch with relative ease.

The loss of millions of pounds of Champions League dosh.

And, perhaps most importantly for the supporters, no cracks at Europe's biggest beasts under the Parkhead floodlights.

It's been a sorry old night.

With Celtic going for broke, bringing on two forwards and chucking everyone downfield, George Tucudean killed the tie with the final kick of the ball.

Celtic Park was rocking, and then it was silent. Scott Bain saved a long-range shot. Celtic's defenders hesitated. Omrani didn't.

The forward raced in to divert the rebound beyond the helpless Bain. Ten minutes to play, Cluj heading through on away goals.

Back roared Celtic. They did play some beautiful stuff in attack, albeit their work with the ball was hopelessly undone by their rank sloppiness without it.

Ryan Christie tapped home after more brilliant play from Edouard, handing the advantage back to Celtic just two minutes after Omrani's penalty had made it 2-2.

After that, it all got a bit nuts. First, Scott Brown was penalised for handling the ball in the box. Billel Omrani put the spot kick away, although it was pretty close to Scott Bain, who got a right hand on it.

Edouard then punished a horrific mix-up in the Cluj defence to zip this shot home first-time and give Celtic the lead. After the early setback, it was all looking rather rosy for the Scottish Champions.

Jock: "Callum McGregor is no left back, huge loss in his natural position tonight. Can’t understand why we had £10m worth of defenders on the bench watching this calamity unfold."

Alan: "Brendan Rodgers sowed the seeds for this chaos with short sighted loans and no forward planning for the defence."

John: "Central midfield most certainly was a problem! Why? Because the best central midfielder at the club was playing left-back! Neil Lennon hasn't a notion."

You've got to look at Neil Lennon. You sign a left-back in Boli Bolingoli, and then you play one of your best players, a midfielder in Callum McGregor, at left-back, and leave your left-back on the bench. It doesn't make sense to me. I'd like to see Celtic's record against big teams with Callum McGregor at left-back. Celtic took McGregor's influence out of the middle of the park - he is so far better than Olivier Ntcham. Would all of that openness, all of those goals have happened if McGregor was in his natural position? I doubt it.

If Cluj were a really good team, they would have taken another couple of goals off Celtic on the counterattack. They were an average team that played above themselves. They were brilliant.
