Newcastle have been desperately poor this first half and offered very little going forward.

Aston Villa thoroughly deserve to be two goals up - if not more. Really clever free-kick for the first one and Newcastle's defence switched off for the second.

It's a long way back for Newcastle but credit to Villa for coming out of of the traps.

Villa two goals to the good, thoroughly deserved.

Miguel Almiron has been hopeless this first half. Steve Bruce will be reading the riot act at half-time as Villa have been much the better team.

The same duo almost combine again.

John McGinn into Anwar El Ghazi, who is onside this time, but the pass from the Scot has too much on it and the ball runs away for a goal kick.

I don't blame John McGinn there. Anwar El Ghazi should time his run better and that was a good opportunity for Villa.

  8. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 44 mins

    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa break and Anwar El Ghazi rolls in a finish...

...but it is ruled out as John McGinn had delayed the pass too long and the Dutchman strayed a yard offside.

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 43 mins

    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

Newcastle close to pulling one back.

Jonjo Shelvey shapes in a corner into the box, Federico Fernandez is highest to leap and meet the ball with a header into the ground which Tom Heaton tips away with a flying save.

Now the pressure is off in some respects for Aston Villa they can draw Newcastle on to them. They just need to keep composure now and move the ball around well.

Can Villa put the game to bed before half time?

What a ball, bang on the money from Conor Hourihane and good finish from Anwar El Ghazi. You have to say though the Newcastle defending has been shambolic.

  14. goal

GOAL - Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastlepublished at 36 mins

    Anwar El Ghazi

    Scored one, makes the other.

It is so simple once again.

Conor Hourihane whips in a free-kick into the six yard box, the Aston Villa players are queuing up to convert and it is Anwar El Ghazi who latches on to it to score his third of the season from a couple of yards out.

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 35 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Jack Grealish is the catalyst for Villa at the moment.

He is proving a handful and is tripped on the edge of the area by Federico Fernandez, earning the Newcastle defender a booking.

    Same again?

This is superbly worked from Aston Villa and a great goal by Conor Hourihane. Villa certainly deserve the lead as they've been the team pushing and on the front

  18. goal

GOAL - Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 31 mins

    Conor Hourihane

    Breakthrough!

    Simple, but executed to perfection.

The angle is set for a left-footer, Conor Hourihane touches the ball off for Jack Grealish, who traps it dead.

That opens up the angle, allowing Hourihane to curl an effort past the wall and into the bottom corner.

Martin Dubravka was unmoved and Villa fully deserve that.

DeAndre Yedlin's mindless defending proves extremely costly.

Terrific save from Martin Dubravka but Dean Smith will feel the Newcastle keeper hasn't been tested enough.
