What a job Steve Bruce is doing at Newcastle, victory today will lift them above the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham into ninth place.

They have 15 points after 12 league matches, six more than at the same stage last season under Rafael Benitez.

16 of the 20 goals conceded by Aston Villa this season have come after half-time, costing them 11 points.

They have also suffered three straight league defeats in the same season for the first time since a run of five in February 2017.

    Barman. Mortgage adviser. England international.

Ten years after being released by Southampton for being too small, Tyrone Mings starts today against Newcastle having played for England in the international break.

In between, he drove a £100 Citroen Saxo, threw a sickie to go on trial at Ipswich Town and had a "pop and growl" at Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy.

Here, BBC Sport speaks to some of the people who have helped him rise from ninth-tier Corsham Town to full international.

    Alan Hutton
Former Aston Villa defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think it will be a bit of a mixed reception for Steve Bruce tonight but he did well at the end of the day.

I don't think many people knew how bad it really was going into the next season - the finances and what he had to work with. Ultimately though, the results weren't good enough and the club had to change.

I hope the fans give him a decent welcome, round of applause and then we can move on.

Villa have not really recovered from losing so late on against Liverpool, and the past few weeks have been a bit of reality check for them.

That is what life is like for a promoted team, with as many downs as ups, but I think Villa will be smiling again on Monday night.

    Prediction: 2-0
