After such a difficult start to this tournament in every possible way, Denmark are in a really good place now.

They were much better than Wales in their last-16 tie, and now a really resolute Czech Republic side stand in their way.

The Czechs have had a very good tournament. They are a very compact and solid team. It's very obvious how they try to work the ball forward, but it is very difficult to try to stop them because they are very good at it.

Lawro's prediction: 1-1 after extra time - Denmark to win on penalties

Denmark have won this tournament once, back in 1992 when they famously replaced Yugoslavia at the last moment - and went on to beat Germany in the final.

The Czech Republic reached the final in 1996 - where they lost to Germany. Czechoslovakia won the Euros in 1976 - beating West Germany thanks to Antonin Panenka's dinked penalty.

Age Hareide was the coach who got Denmark into the Euros. He led them through their qualifying group and was due to be replaced by Kasper Hjulmand after the Euros.

Because of the Covid pandemic and delay to the tournament Hjulmand replaced Hareide last year.

Hareide told the BBC: “The strength of the squad is being friends. There are very, very tight connections between the players. Denmark is a small country and most of these players have been playing together from the U-16s up to the national team so they know each other really well.

"When I came in, I settled the team more like a club side than a national team side. There wasn’t like two or three players doing things together, they mixed up really well. I tested my ideas with a four-man group inside the squad: Simon Kjaer, Kasper Schmeichel, Christian Eriksen and Thomas Delaney.”

Former Denmark boss Age Hareide on not getting the chance to manage the team at the Euros: “Of course, it’s mixed feelings when you watch them play but Covid-19 has caused so much damage in society and people are out of work.

"I’ve lost the Euros and of course that is a heavy blow for me but I don’t feel sorry for myself. People are dead and people have lost their jobs so I have to close my eyes and say I hope the players and the coach do well and close the book.”

Czech Republic v Denmark (17:00 BST)

Czech Republic assistant coach Jiri Chytry: “Diamonds can cut diamonds.

“Both teams base their football on team-work and intense bursts of pace. Both try to counter opponents’ higher individual skills using these assets, too. We have similar weapons.”

  10. Previous meetings...published at 16:25 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

Czech Republic v Denmark (17:00 BST)

This is the third meeting between the teams at the European Championship. The Czechs have won both previous games, 2-0 in the Euro 2000 group stages and 3-0 in the 2004 quarter-final.

Five of the last six matches between the Czech Republic and Denmark have ended as draws, the last one in a November 2016 friendly.

  11. The Schick showpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 3 July 2021

Czech Republic v Denmark (17:00 BST)

Patrik Schick has scored 15 goals in 30 appearances for the Czech Republic, netting four goals in four games at Euro 2020 so far.

Only five players have scored five goals in their first-ever Euros, most recently France's Antoine Griezmann with six in 2016. Schick's compatriot Milan Baros hit five at Euro 2004.

Schick has scored three left-footed goals at Euro 2020, the most of any player. In European Championship history, the only player to score more than three left-footed goals in a single tournament was Griezmann at Euro 2016 with four.

Czech Republic v Denmark (17:00 BST)

    BBC World Service

Vaclav Nemecek captained the Czech Republic at Euro 96, having played at the 1990 World Cup for Czechoslovakia.

The 54-year-old told the BBC: “With Denmark, everybody knows what happened in the first game. Now they are more liberated in their heads and they have very good players.

"But it’s good for us that they try to play football. Our coach will not make big changes, I think. So I think they will play a similar style as against Netherlands - solid in defence and counter attack. In my opinion, instead of just one striker, Schick, we can play with two."

They smashed Russia 4-1 in the final group game and then demolished Wales 4-0 in the last 16.
