There are only three countries left who could win the 2020 European Championship.

    Italy, Denmark...

    ...and England.

In 96 I made an England flag banner saying "I still love you Southgate" out of a sheet, and my mum's lipstick. Hung it in my window as I lived near Villa Park and in my childish naivety, assumed Gareth would drive past my house to get home (cos of course he lived opposite Villa Park in my head). I hoped he'd see it and it would help cheer him up and inspire him onto greater things. I assume he saw it and will reference it as inspiration in his post match interview.

  5. Your England starting XIpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    England v Denmark (20:00 BST)

    BBC Sport readers' England XI

We asked you who should start for England against Denmark - and the majority of you think Gareth Southgate should stick with the same XI he picked against Ukraine.

Having yet to concede a goal in the tournament, it comes as no surprise that goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was the most selected player overall.

Now Harry Kane is up and running with three goals, the England captain has been entrusted by you to lead the line again. Kane - who earned star of the match honours against Ukraine - is the third-most picked player overall.

The front three are completed by Raheem Sterling, who is the most selected player on the left side of attack, and Jadon Sanchowho is the top choice to start on the right.

While Jack Grealish was a popular choice, the Aston Villa captain's picks were split between a host of midfield and forward roles, so he just misses out.

You can still choose your England XI here but your selections will not be counted towards the result.

We're on holiday in Cheltenham at the moment - lovely place but can't get away from the Denmark game references. Firstly, our room is named Copenhagen, we visited Gloucester today where we passed Denmark Road on the bus and of course there is Southgate Street, were we walked down at the docks area. Come on England!!!

Spent the last 27 mins setting up my TV to its optimum picture, angle and sound. Pointless really as 4 mins in I will be behind the sofa

Steve McMahon made four appearances at the 1990 World Cup as England reached the semi-finals but the midfielder was an unused substitute in the defeat by West Germany.

They can't let the occasion take over. They have to play the team and not the occasion. The fear of failure brings pressure anyway. If England don't win, it's a failure. Football is all about pressure because we have everything to lose.

My advice to Jordan Henderson: These things can pass you by. It might be your only opportunity. You rarely get second chances. It's a wonderful opportunity... make the most of it!

Jordan is so professional. On and off the pitch he has proven he is ready when needed. He has been proactive and behind the scenes he has been a great person. He's in the squad for his leadership qualities as well.

  9. 'Players are fearful of you' - Waddlepublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

Former England winger Chris Waddle was a key figure in England's run to the 1990 World Cup semi-final. He was one of the two players who missed his penalty in the shootout defeat by West Germany.

My advice to Raheem Sterling: You are playing against players who are fearful of you. They have watched you. They know you've scored goals in this tournament. They know you've got pace. Use your advantage. Use what they are scared of.

Go out and enjoy it. Relax. Be as confident as you can be. Use your assets. Opponents don't like pace so use it. Get in the box when you can because you know you can score goals and proved it in this tournament. Do what the defenders don't like and don't want.

Chris Powell is a key cog in Gareth Southgate's trusted coaching team, but did you know that they both started their football careers as youth team players at Crystal Palace, oversized blazers and all?

It means Powell has a great insight into how Southgate's career was "forged" and how, he thinks, his friend has become a benchmark for a modern day international manager.

The former Charlton left-back also tells a great tale about the day he danced in Southgate's shoes!

Former England striker Alan Shearer on BBC Sport: "This is an unbelievable opportunity for this group of players and this manager. If they get through to the final it will be six out of seven games at Wembley.

"They have to make the most of that. They are enjoying it and there is no reason that should stop now, we hope it continues, they are making everyone in this country so happy and proud, which is what everyone needs. Two more games and that could be it.

"You would rather play at home in front of your own fans. I was lucky enough to be at Wembley when there was 40,000 there for that Germany game and the atmosphere was electric, it felt like there as 140,000 there.

"There's going to be 60,000 in for the semi-final and final, that can only help the players and the manager."

Alan Shearer finished Euro 1996 as top scorer and netted the opener in the semi-final penalty shootout defeat by Germany. The striker played alongside current England manager Gareth Southgate.

In everyone's life there are moments when you look back and think 'what if?' Memories that keep you awake at night, replaying them over and over again.

That semi-final in 1996 remains the biggest game I've ever played in. The atmosphere and the build-up was indescribable. I'll never forget it. I still get goose bumps thinking about it.

My message to England's players is pretty simple - everyone is behind you, so enjoy every minute of it.

Bring it on, because I can't wait.

    England

England have never won the European Championship and are looking to reach a first major tournament final for 55 years.

They have appeared in five previous World Cup or European Championship semi-finals but only advanced once.

England manager Gareth Southgate: "We don't have as good a football history as we like to believe sometimes.

"These players are making massive strides and breaking down barriers all the time.

"We have never been to a European Championship final so we can be the first England team to do that which is really exciting."
