I think England were fortunate to get the penalty against Denmark, but just how much contact was there now, did Raheem Sterling need to go down?

Oh my. Wow. Just for a second, it looked like England were going to be given a penalty. Raheem Sterking drives into the box and goes down with Italians chipping away at him.

The referee waves all the protests away.

He had arms all over him. If it'd been given, would there have been complaints?

I've finished a beer and made a brew. That's how confident I am, how completely my anxiety has evaporated. We'll get the 2nd goal and lift the trophy. Mark my words.

We've got some more information on the secutiry issues before kick-off.

Earlier, a Wembley spokesperson said fans who stormed the stadium's gates did not gain access to watch the match.

But we've just had this update:

Wembley Stadium spokesperson: "There was a breach of security and a small group of people got into the stadium. We are now working closely with stadium stewards and security to remove these people. Anyone inside the stadium without a ticket will be instantly ejected."

  9. 'What a start. What a goal. What an atmosphere'published at 21:04 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

What a start. What a goal. What an atmosphere. This thing was rocking here and it was well deserved. England were sharp, they were determined and what a goal from Luke Shaw. It's a dream start because if you want to do one thing against Italy it is to go up a goal. Because then they cannot play their game, they cannot react to your game. They have to come out and that's where they usually struggle in their way of playing.

  10. 'England are the dominant team'published at 21:03 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Yes we are great in these positions at the moment. But from a physical point of view, we look extremely dominant. They don't look like they have got any players that really hurt us, or make you question yourself.

Chiesa is the only one who has offered a second thought because of his but in the main [England] are the dominant team.

Paolo Brand: The Three Lions had the best of that half & will be delighted to be ahead. Italy were shockingly poor I thought and offered little of the quality side we’ve seen to date.

Mikey: Declan Rice just played the greatest 45 mins of his life. Patrick Vieira in an England kit. Second goal kills the game. Come on, England!!

I wish I could be as cool as Gareth Southgate when that goal went in. Couple of claps and then glance around a bit. Ice in his veins.

  13. 'Dream start' for Luke Shawpublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    HT: Italy 0-1 England

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

We talked about resilience before with Raheem Sterling, [Luke Shaw] has shown immense resilience. he was hung out to dry. Jose Mourinho didn't fancy him clearly.

He has come back from that, that shows character, that shows somebody that actually works on himself not only physically but mentally as well and what a dream start to the game.

England halftime team talk needs to focus on pressing higher up more, and breaking quicker. Can't sit back and let Italy build more and more momentum. (This for my hat trick of posts tonight!)

  17. Goal 'justifies team selection'published at 20:59 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

That is wing back to wing back. That justifies the team selection and the change in formation to the wing backs at . That is what allows the two wing backs to get up the pitch like they did.

Like we said before, if you are five at the back it can be a problem. If you are three at the back you can be a threat.

  18. 'Absolutely stunning' finish from Shawpublished at 20:58 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    HT: Italy 0-1 England

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

The way Luke Shaw started the move deep into his own half showed great composure. He didn't want to hoof it up the park, he wanted to play out. Harry Kane coming deep as we thought and wanted him to do. The switch of play, the running off the ball from Kyle Walker - that's the third centre half by the way in the first two minutes of the game. What a ball in and an incredible finish on the half volley. To get the accuracy as he did, stunning. Absolutely stunning.

Rice and Phillips have sniffed out danger before anyone else so you consistently feel protected and even though Italy have got possession it's been controlled.

We got to be aware of the counter attack and the only thing I'm worried about is giving away free-kicks. We can't make stupid fouls and give free-kicks away around the box.
