  1. RFL statement on Leeds Rhinospublished at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

The Rugby Football League has released a statement after Leeds Rhinos announced earlier that they would not travel to Catalan Dragons this weekend for their scheduled match after a player showed symptoms of coronavirus.

"We have been advised by Leeds Rhinos that they will not be travelling to France to fulfil their scheduled fixture against Catalans Dragons.

"The consequences of this decision on the match, and any sanction, will be determined by the RFL Board."

Remarkably that suggests the RFL have not ruled out sanctioning Leeds for pulling out of the fixture.

  5. 'People are talking about coronavirus'published at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

    Cheltenham FestivalImage source, PA Media

Thousands of fans will gather at Cheltenham today for the final day of festival.

Horse racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght has described what the mood around the course has been like ahead of the Gold Cup.

"I've felt a bit weird about the whole thing, to be honest," Lysaght told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I should be saying, 'we’re standing here at Cheltenham racecourse, the great National Hunt racing centre, the sun is out and there’s a tremendous Gold Cup in prospect and the scene is absolutely set'...

"But the backdrop is the coronavirus and it is what people are talking about.

"I bumped into an Irish visitor and he said he’s got four children - all under fifteen - and they’re now at home off school and his wife is worried sick; he half-hoped the racing might be off today because he wants to get home.

"Ultimately, when you think about it, is that the right thing to do? It’s such a curious situation."

  9. Government considering banning sporting eventspublished at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

    Boris JohnsonImage source, Getty Images

The UK government is considering banning sporting fixtures amid the coronavirus outbreak - but it will not happen immediately.

"We are considering banning major public events like sporting fixtures," said PM Boris Johnson.

"The scientific advice is this has little effect on the spread - but it does place a burden on other public services."

Johnson added: "We are guided by the science; there is no medical reason at the moment to ban such events.

"We are not saying no to that sort of measure, we are keeping it up our sleeves. But it is very, very important in order to maximise our interventions that we get the timing right."

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

A meeting of Premier League clubs has been called this morning to decide the way forward in light of overnight events.

My understanding it that a postponement of matches en-masse is the likely outcome, probably until the international break, to give everyone time to reassess and work out what to do next.

This is an unprecedented situation and there are no easy answers.

The Cheltenham Festival reaches its conclusion today with Al Boum Photo bidding to become the first horse since Best Mate to defend the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

While attendances have been down this week, it is expected the total number of spectators at the four-day meeting will still be close to 250,000.

Race course boss Ian Renton, speaking to 5 Live Sport, says organisers have been careful to ensure the safety of fans attending the event.

"We have heard from the government that racing does continue in this country and that the festival will continue to its ultimatum.

"We have put the measures in place – as we said we would here – and we’ve been pleased to see the crowds enjoying some fantastic racing."
