Finally it went England's way. It's joyous!

I had a tear in my eye after that, I don't mind admitting. We love penalty shootouts!

It's a very young side, they had to dig deep at times. There was a lot of leggy players struggling out there and they found a way to be resilient.

    It's brilliant.

What an incredible night! To win in the way they did, to put up with the dirty tricks from Colombia and come back from a late goal.

They had to drag it up, they deserved it.

Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

What a feeling. Remember where you were when we actually won a penalty shootout. I was jumping around when Dier put that penalty in.

Colombia caused England problems when they started to play but it was good for football to see us go through tonight. A lot of England fans behind me are all singing 'It's coming home'.

World Cup 2018: England's historic penalty shootout win against Colombia in full

England goalscorer Harry Kane: "These are the moments when you really see the hard work. I'm so proud of the boys and the staff. It's a big night for England.

"Obviously we spoke a lot about being an inexperienced, young team, but we grew a lot out there tonight. Even when we were behind in the penalty shootout we thought 'please, save one Pickers!' And he did. It was nice to get it off our back and we can move forward now.

"As a striker you want to score goals, do your job and do the best for the team. Hopefully it continues. I'm extremely proud of these achievements but I want to do better and do more. I'm looking forward to the next game.

"It will give us huge belief. There's still a long way to go but this will give us more belief than ever and the fans back home. They are enjoying it and we are too."

'We're trying to write our own history' - Southgate and players on historic win

England manager Gareth Southgate on ITV: "Fantastic. I think we deserved it as well. We played so well in the 90 minutes, We showed resilience to come back from huge disappointment and kept calm. It's huge credit to all our players and staff.

"Shootouts are tough. We had talked long and hard about owning the process of a shootout. They kept calm. The players have taken it all on board, it's a special moment for us.

"We looked at technique, how we needed to be as a team, the goalkeeper's role. A special moment but now I'm thinking about Sweden.

"This was special but I want us to go on. Sweden is another team we have a poor record against. We have underestimated them for years.

"We didn't rise to it which was brilliant, in general. A couple of times we lost our cool. It was an away game, to deal with it all was exceptional.

"They have created their own story and made history. I don't want to go home yet."

World Cup 2018: Jordan Pickford saves, Eric Dier scores - England's winning penalty moment

Eric Dier, who scored the winning penalty: "It was a nervous one. I've never really been in a situation like that before but felt I had to score after missing the header at the end so I'm just thankful I scored!

"Jordan (Pickford) is a fantastic goalkeeper and deserves everything. His attitude is brilliant and he's been brilliant in training and taken it into the game.

"To get knocked down like we did is difficult to come back from it. We knew what we had to do and we stayed calm. We never panicked. We were ready for that."
