  1. CLOSE!

    Netherlands 0-4 England

Almost five! Steve McManaman has the full-back on toast again as he swings a cross in behind the defence but Darren Anderton just fails to make the connection.

  2. Get involved #bbceuros

Dan Riley: The Sheringham dummy in England's 3rd goal v Dutch is one of my favourite moments ever in football. Could have gone for glory but played the smart ball and won the game

Classified: I was only 10 at the time & couldnt remember all the details. Read recently Edwin spilled the shot from anderton for 4th goal. I'd hardly call it a spill. Deflection wrong footing him, it was actually a good save. It's great to see @alanshearer in his pomp

  3. Post update

    Netherlands 0-4 England

    David Pleat

    Former Tottenham manager at Wembley

England are safe, they are sound and at times they have been spectacular.

  4. SUBSTITUTION

    Netherlands 0-4 England

Terry Venables certainly has one eye on the quarter-finals now as David Platt, likely to come in for the suspended Paul Ince in the next game, is given a run out as he replaces Ince.

  5. Post update

    Netherlands 0-4 England

Yellow card for Dennis Bergkamp as he fouls the excellent Steve McManaman. Paul Gascoigne takes the free kick but it goes wide.

  6. Post update

    Netherlands 0-4 England

Dennis Bergkamp is in but slips as he shoots and the effort is gratefully scooped up by David Seaman.

This is turning into more than a thrashing for the Netherlands. They need to be mindful of goal difference as they are not definitely through yet.

  7. Get involved #bbceuros

Nigel Quin: This is one of best England performances I have ever seen. It really did feel like football was coming home

Mr N Potter: Oh My God - How Good is this England Team

JB Photography: The 1996 England team were sensational.

  8. 'Best England performance'

    Netherlands 0-4 England

    Barry Davies

    BBC commentator at Wembley

This is becoming the best England performance in many a long day.

There's a fireman's hat on the side, and it is England who are on fire.

  9. GOAL - Netherlands 0-4 England

    Teddy Sheringham

    Video content

Video caption: Euro 96 - England v Netherlands: Sheringham makes it four

    YES, DAVID, THEY CAN!

What are we seeing here!? England made a slow start to this tournament but have roared into life now and this is turning into a bit of a embarrassment for the Dutch.

It is Teddy Sheringham again as Darren Anderton's low drive from distance is spilled by Edwin Van der Sar and Sheringham is on hand to prod in the rebound.

The scenes in the stands! It's party time for England fans.

  10. Post update

    Netherlands 0-3 England

    David Pleat

    Former Tottenham manager at Wembley

England have had their champagne moments, can they have any more tonight? They have done enough.

  11. Get involved #bbceuros

Rick: We had a pretty decent team, but we got ripped apart by a superb English side. Painful at the time, now watching it more relaxed, cool match.

  12. Post update

    Netherlands 0-3 England

"It's coming home, it's coming home, football's coming home" chant the home fans.

Is this the moment England fans truly start to believe? Absolutely incredible performance from the Three Lions.

  13. Get involved #bbceuros

Adam Salter: That 2nd goal by Shearer (and 3rd overall). You can’t help but smile. Glorious

Jordan Dias: Ah, Barry Davies. "... Gascoigne... Sheringham... Sherear ... well you have to say, that's magnificent."

  14. Post update

    Netherlands 0-3 England

    Barry Davies

    BBC commentator at Wembley

It is three! And you have to say, that is magnificent.

  15. GOAL - Netherlands 0-3 England

    Alan Shearer

    Video content

Video caption: Euro 96 - England v Netherlands: Shearer thumps home his second of the game

Oh yes! Lovely, lovely goal and England are flying!

Steve McManaman finds Paul Gascoigne inside the area, the midfielder weaves his way further into the box before cutting back to Teddy Sheringham, who cleverly squares to Alan Shearer rather than shoot and Shearer duly thumps home!

That is surely that now, England are SAILING into the quarter-finals. What a performance!

  16. Post update

    Netherlands 0-2 England

    Video content

Video caption: Euro 96 - England v Netherlands: Seedorf's long range shot is saved

Ooh, bit of a lazy clearance of a cross by Darren Anderton as he knocks the ball straight into Clarence Seedorf's path. The midfielder shoots from distance but straight at David Seaman.

England need to keep their focus. Still not there yet.

  17. Post update

    Netherlands 0-2 England

Wembley is a cauldron of noise once more as the England fans taunt their Dutch counterparts by chanting the scoreline.

The Netherlands remain determined, though, as Ronald de Boer weaves through the middle, finds Peter Hoekstra to his left but the forward's cross is headed behind.

  18. Get involved #bbceuros

Darren Banks: 2-0!! - Wonderful header from Sheringham

Adam: Love a classic England match!! McMannaman!!!

Martin Emmerson: Watching #bbceuros England v Holland from 1996. Remember watching it in The Brit in Cleadon. The roof came off in the second half. What a night that was.

  19. GOAL - Netherlands 0-2 England

    Teddy Sheringham

    Video content

Video caption: Euro 96 - England v Netherlands: Sheringham doubles England's lead

    Lead doubled!

A superb corner from the left finds Teddy Sheringham, who rises to nod into the bottom corner.

The Tottenham striker has been banging them in for fun in the Premier League and is now up and running at Euro 1996 but, crucially, England have one foot firmly in the quarter-finals!

  20. Post update

    Netherlands 0-1 England

Bit more zip about the Dutch at the start of this second half, England have some defending to do at the moment.

There's a bit of a nervous silence around Wembley now, fearful of an equaliser.
