    Never. In. Doubt!

Alan Shearer sweeps home the penalty. Edwin Van der Sar does guess the right way but just can't reach it and England are ahead.

The quarter-finals are firmly within sight!

The Real Ian M: Even though I was around at the time, rewatching now makes me think #stevemcmanaman was underrated

Davy Mannses: I remember watching this. I’d just finished my GCSEs!

  9. Post update

    Netherlands 0-0 England

Nice passage of play by England as they confidently knock the ball around.

The move ends disappointingly as Gary Neville's ball into the box is too long, but the home fans show their appreciation for the play before that.

Good to see them playing with a bit of swagger against an excellent Dutch team.

  10. Post update

    Netherlands 0-0 England

Now it is the Netherlands' turn for a corner but Aron Winter heads over at the near post.

Can't take your eyes off this one so far, end-to-end.

  11. 'No-one playing for the draw!'

    Netherlands 0-0 England

    Barry Davies

    BBC commentator at Wembley

I can't see anyone playing for the draw here in this opening! Good attacking football from both sides.

    Off the line!!

Almost the opener for England as Darren Anderton's corner finds Alan Shearer unmarked in the middle of the box and the striker's powerful volley is cleared off the line.

    So close!

  13. Post update

  14. Post update

    Netherlands 0-0 England

Now England come forward as Gareth Southgate drives through the middle before playing a neat ball wide to Darren Anderton. The midfielder swings the ball to the far post but it is slightly over hit and goes out of play.

Cracking start, but can both sides keep up this high tempo play?

The Netherlands are on the front foot from the outset but a promising move ends when Dennis Bergkamp's high ball into the box goes out of play.

  18. KICK-OFF

    Netherlands 0-0 England

Brilliant atmosphere inside Wembley. Will England put in a performance and secure their place in the quarter-finals? It is time to find out.

  19. 'A tournament of two halves for England'

    Barry Davies

    BBC commentator at Wembley

So far, England have rewritten the cliche of a game of two halves. England have played for two halves but in two games - the first half against Switzerland and the second half against Scotland.
