  1. CLOSE!published at 22 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield Utd

First "save" of the game for Aaron Ramsdale, but Douglas Luiz's header from Trezeguet's knock down is straight at the Blades goalkeeper.

Could have caught that with his eyes closed.

  2. Postpublished at 21 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield Utd

Villa are launching cross after cross into the Sheffield United penalty area but the visiting defenders are coping well so far, getting their heads on to every ball.

  3. CLOSE!published at 18 mins

Villa are getting plenty of free-kicks in the final third.

Each one has been cleared but one is bound to drop their way sooner or later.

This time Blades defender Jack O'Connell flicks a superb header wide of his own goal.

Paul: Right decision to send John Egan off. Watkins would have got to that ball before Ramsdale without the foul so he's denied a goalscoring opportunity. Its exactly the same scenario as Christensen getting sent off for Chelsea and again spot on.

  6. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield Utd

Sheffield United have 77 minutes to play with 10 men.

They had a poor start in their opening game v Wolves, conceding twice in the opening six minutes, and this hasn't been too great either.

I thought Ollie Watkins was offside initially. But he's definitely pulling him back.

  8. RED CARD TO SHEFFIELD UTDpublished at 11 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield Utd

    Had to be?

Villa defender Tyrone Mings plays a long punt upfield and Ollie Watkins is happy to chase it.

But the Villa striker has Sheffield United captain John Egan with him, who is pulling and tugging at his shirt, similar to Andreas Christensen on Sadio Mane on Sunday.

Aaron Ramsdale comes off his line to clear, but the referee comes over and brandishes a straight red for Egan.

Jack Grealish plays at his own pace. That's the sign of a good player. He settles things down and slows the game down.

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 9 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield Utd

Not seen much of Villa skipper Jack Grealish yet, the home side will be hoping he gets on the ball to dictate the play.

And he does threaten to lead a break away but is chopped down by John Lundstram, who earns an early booking.

A lot of Sheffield United's goals are created from wide areas. It was a great cross but great defending at the near post.

  12. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield Utd

Villa looking to play out from the back but it is very risky as Conor Hourihane's pass almost sells new goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez short, but he can hack the ball to safety with David McGoldrick closing in.

  13. CLOSE!published at 1 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Sheffield Utd

Rapid start from Aston Villa and it is the new boy Matty Cash who is involved, swinging a deep cross to the back post for the stretching John McGinn to volley over.

Very good that from Sheffield United, in reference to the 'goal' that wasn't given in their last meeting against Aston Villa.

  20. 'We worked harder as a team'published at 17:35 British Summer Time 21 September 2020

Aston Villa v Sheffield Utd (18:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith tells Sky Sports: "You can't judge it until you play games but the standard in training has gone up. You can see from the arrival of Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash, it increased the quality of the training sessions.

"We started with stability last season but lost Tom Heaton and Wesley to knee injuries but I have worked with Ollie before and he will score goals at this level.

"Bertrand Traore was not signed in time so unavailable for today.

"We gave too many big chances away that was leading to goals so we had a collective agreement in what we had to do. We worked harder as a team and got fitter which was a major thing that improved in lockdown."
