  2. 'Solskjaer didn't trust his bench'published at 23:19 British Summer Time 26 May 2021

Former Celtic manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't trust his bench. He didn't turn to it, and this is Manchester United we are talking about. This is worrying.

Maybe he was trying to send a message to the board, I don't know, but you think after 75 or 80 minutes he'd want to make a change to go and win the game in 90 or during extra time.

  3. 'Man Utd were functional, ineffective and lacked a lot of creativity'published at 23:18 British Summer Time 26 May 2021

I didn't see enough of the Manchester United way tonight and I haven't seen enough of it in the last three or four years. Back in the end when you went to watch them you wanted to watch the Harlem Globetrotters and you wanted to be entertained.

There was zero entertainment tonight - it was functional, ineffective and lacked a lot of creativity and flair.

    That's a fair point about United's bench.

Manchester City might have had Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling or Gabriel Jesus on the bench.

Chelsea could have had Kai Havertz or Olivier Giroud.

Even Liverpool could have been looking at Diogo Jota.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to be able to look over his shoulder and see a bench like Manchester City have. We keep referring to City but they are the benchmark at the moment.

He looked over his shoulder tonight and thought 'who is going to change it for me?' and thought 'right, I'm not sure' so he brought Fred on. That isn't going to make any difference to winning the game.

  6. 'Man Utd need to start climbing the quality ladder'published at 23:13 British Summer Time 26 May 2021

    Neil Lennon
Former Celtic manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

If Manchester City were playing Villarreal tonight you'd fancy them to win the game 3-0 or 4-0. I think Liverpool and Chelsea would have won too. Manchester United have to start climbing the quality ladder, they are still short.

Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga and are a good side, but they are not a Champions League side. I think they will struggle against the elite.

Man Utd's big players didn't turn up, and maybe they are not big players after all.

Fans helped to give this a great atmosphere tonight. Villarreal's supporters are singing, holding their scarves aloft and some are in tears.

Villarreal's Mario Gaspar and Raul Albiol carry the trophy across to the rest of the players and hold it aloft as the yellow ticker tape pops out.

Unai Emery gets his fourth Europa League winners' medal. And his players come up to get theirs. They're all hugging and kissing the cup as they walk past it. Don't worry lads, you'll be getting it soon.

Manchester United's players are up now to get their runners-up medals. Most of them take them off the moment they step off the podium.

  12. 'I don't see the progression at Man Utd'published at 23:07 British Summer Time 26 May 2021

    Neil Lennon
Former Celtic manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't see the progression that people talk about with Manchester United. Four years ago under Jose Mourinho they finished second in the Premier League and won the Europa League, and four years on they've actually regressed.

The fact they didn't get out of the Champions League group stage was a warning bell for me. They are going to have to invest if they are going to back the manager. This will be a really sore one for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tonight - he's been in charge for two and a half years now and he still hasn't won any silverware. That is what it is about.

The referee and his team go up to get thier medals. Fist bumps with Alex Ferguson and some other old men I've never seen before.

Alex Ferguson is part of the trophy presentation team. I bet he didn't really expect he'd be dishing it out to Villarreal's players.

It should never have got to extra time - Manchester United should have taken their chances. Villarreal set up to spoil United's chances.

Villarreal's players look delighted, understandably. This is the biggest day in their history.

  17. 'Man Utd are a million miles away'published at 23:04 British Summer Time 26 May 2021

    Neil Lennon
Former Celtic manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United are a work in progress, they are a million miles away from being the finished article. I've seen that over the course of the season, tonight was glaring.

Villarreal were quite happy to concede possession but Manchester United weren't good enough to create any clear-cut opportunities. They lacked a lack of quality all over the piece and that's been apparent for a lot of the season.

They've got good character, but in terms of actual quality, they are a long way behind Manchester City and they are behind Liverpool and Chelsea for me.

That win takes Villarreal up from the Europa Conference League play-offs next season to the Champions League group stages.
