He's got the armband tonight and there's no doubting who's leading this Northern Ireland team in the opening stages.

Playing in between Craig Cathcart and Dan Ballard in the back three, he has literally not stopped organising those two, along with the two wing-backs and midfielders.

Playing a high line but dropping off when he has to, he has even thrown in a Cruyff turn to get out of trouble as well as spraying two lovely balls forward.

Ballard will be enjoying having the Leicester City man talking him through it.

The players will be starting to look toward the weekend and going back to their clubs, they'll be hoping to go back without any injuries so it definitely has the feeling of being a bit of a dead rubber.

Romania have won three of their five away games in the Nations League (D1 L1), although lost on their last such match versus Norway in October.

They are looking to win consecutive matches for the first time since September-October 2019 when they secured victories over Malta (1-0) and Faroe Islands (3-0).

A rare Northern Ireland attack but it doesn't lead to anything. Jonny Evans plays a good ball forward which Josh Magennis heads into the path of Liam Boyce.

Boyce overhits the ball to Matty Kennedy, who does get fouled but doesn't get a free-kick somehow.

No goals in any of the games involving home nations or the Republic of Ireland yet.

It's 0-0 in the other game in this group, between Austria and a makeshift Norway team.

Every time Bailey Peacock-Farrell gets the ball at his feet he looks for Josh Magennis but he hasn't been winning those balls he's being marked well.

Since winning each of their first three clashes with Romania between 1984 and 1994, Northern Ireland have failed to win any of the most recent four (D2 L2).

Only against Albania (four games) have Northern Ireland played host more often than Romania (three) without ever suffering defeat.

  12. 'Northern Ireland need to be careful'published at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2020

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

First shot on goal for Romania but he didn't really have much to do Bailey Peacock-Farrell, they didn't get much on the shot. Romania always neat and tidy trying to play those one-twos round the edge of the box so Northern Ireland have got to be careful.

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Northern Ireland would still have a tiny bit of hope if they do win tonight.

If Norway successfully appealed to Uefa, Romania would lose three points (although they could get them back if the game was replayed or lots were drawn).

NI have to beat Romania for that to have any relevance though.

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Romania

Romania's first shot but it's a comfortable stop from Bailey Peacock-Farrell to deny Dennis Man's shot from a tight angle.

Ian Baraclough has suffered a defeat in each of his three home games in charge of Northern Ireland, as many as Michael O’Neil during his final nine matches.

However, it did take his predecessor until his sixth match to record his first home victory (1-0 v Russia in August 2013).

Baraclough has two draws and five defeats in his seven games in charge, although one of those draws was the penalty shootout win over Bosnia in the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final.
