So, with that win Newcastle are up to 10th and they leapfrog Palace in the process. The former now a point ahead of the latter, 14-13.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace forward Jeffrey Schlupp: "It's very disappointing. It wasn't the best of games but looked to be heading for 0-0. We conceded two sloppy goals.

"Any team with a player of the ability of Wilf (Zaha) will miss him. But there are still 11 players on the pitch with the quality to win a game, We didn't show that today.

"We have missed the fans. Everyone knows what our fans are capable of. We are looking forward to having them back and hopefully they can push us on to some wins."

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's frustrating because I know we can play better and then the goals came so late. But all credit to Newcastle - they did exceptionally well to defend the way they did and to win it is a bonus for them.

"This is not a performance we can be particularly proud of. We have to accept that if we want to get points on the board then we need to do better."

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson: "All defeats hurt and this one did as we didn't play well. I didn't think we were going to lose. I didn't think we would win it either. So to lose it is a bitter blow. Congratulations to Newcastle on winning it.

"I would credit the whole Newcastle team. The keeper played his part but I think it is too simplistic to say we didn't win because of their goalkeeper. We didn't create enough.

"I was confident we would play well tonight. We will do our best but to make those predictions (about winning next week) would be foolish. I thought we played better at Burnley than we did tonight. We will have to come over this, deal with it, analyse it and play the kind of football we are capable of playing when we face West Brom next Sunday."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce, speaking to BBC Sport: "Both teams find it fifficult to score a goal and we were looking for that little bit of quality. We weren''t clinical enough and I thought it was going to cost us but then we got it for the goals. Callum [Wilson] is a goalscorer and he has that instinct, That's his seventh goal now and that's a tremendous return.

"There is no disputing that Joelinton has foud it difficult but I've said many times that some take a little more time than others. But we're delighted he's scored a goal.

"I'm delighted with the atittitude. It's been a difficult week but we've responded in the right way."

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce: "We created a few opportunities and missed the right pass and that little bit of quality. That bit of quality the two strikers did show they have both scored from. Winning late on is not a bad trait to have. The players have responded at the end of a tough week.

"It doesn't matter about price tag and where you come from, sometimes you need time. In Joe's case, the price tag and number nine shirt meant he struggled at times. But the kid wants to do well. He has a lot of opportunities tonight but we are starting to see him now with his strength."

Newcastle United

Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow: "We deserved the three points. The way we played in the first half was a stark contrast to the way we've played recently. It's a great result for us and we need to build on it."

On striker Joelinton, who scored and provided an assist: "Joelinton has always worked very hard for us. It was always going to change for him at some point. Tonight he played very well and his work rate and effort has been there every game. It's just a case of contuing that for him."

Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson: "A little bit of a frustrating game but you need to be patient and be ready for the opportunity. We played well tonight and limited them to a few chances. We didn't create much ourselves but got the goals when it mattered.

"You work hard on fitness and be as fresh as you can. It puts you in good stead for the latter stages in the game.

"I feel when a chance comes I am confident to put it away. It was a scruffy finish but they all count. It was nice too for Joe to get on the score sheet."

Well, we had to wait for it but we finally got some entertainment. Goals from Wilson and Joelinton give Newcastle the win in what was an otherwise awful game of football.

Almost 3-0. Shelvey strikes a free-kick over the wall and forces Guaita into a diving save.

Joelinton gets his applause, heading off to be replaced by Fabian Schar.

The striker scored and assisted tonight, after a run of 16 games in the Premier League without a goal or assist.

There is suddenly a desperate air about the home side. They are chasing after every dead ball to get it back in play ASAP. They realise they had 88 minutes before this point to do something?

Wow, how close can you get? I actually think Patrick van Aanholt went for goal there but then it could have been a tap-in at the far post!

What is going on? Palace have suddenly decided to go gung-ho. They have men lining up in the box for a Van Aanholt low cross that flies in front of them all. Was the defender crossing or shooting? Either way it has come to nothing.

There may well be a winner in this yet. Kouyate gets a glimpse of goal and fires an angled shot that is heading to the target until Fernandez throws himself in the way to block.

A little flurry of activity on the edge of the Palace box ends with Sean Longstaff having a low shot blocked.
