  2. 'A special goal from a special player'published at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2021

    FT: Wolves 1-0 Crystal Palace

    Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo: “It [the FA Cup] deserved to be respect because it is the oldest competition. We want to compete and go as far as possible and we always try. It was a special goal from a special player [Adama Traore]. I am very happy because I think this goal will boost his confidence.

“He has been really trying in training sessions and that is why I am so happy.

“We have to have patience with everybody. It has been a hard season for everybody, all the teams, players and managers. You can see how the situation affects everybody.

“Adama is a versatile player, who can play in a couple of positions and one thing we are sure about is that every time he is on the pitch he always has an impact.”

  3. 'It was rusty but better in the second half'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2021

    Aston Villa 1-4 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "The kids did really well - that's good. We had football problems. We needed a little bit longer but then it was completely clear.

"Problems in passing and moving. Too many on the wrong side of the ball - not enough recoveries of passes. We had chances and shot the ball directly at the goalie - we changed it in the second half.

"It was rusty but better in the second half. Against Southampton [1-0 defeat] from the first second they were more on the pitch but that was not the case today."

On having nine days off before facing Manchester United: "We have a lot players with no rhythm. We will do a lot of 11 v 11 training."

  4. 'We have to be very careful before we start lamenting that life is hard'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2021

    FT: Wolves 1-0 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson: "I thought in the second half we had quite a lot of control but we were a goal down to an incredible strike. We have suffered from a few of those in recent weeks. It meant that Wolves could sit back and defend which they did well.

"They [Christian Benteke and Michy Batshuayi] will be a little disappointed and they were both desperate to do well. They both worked extremely well and respected the tactical instructions we had given them but it didn’t fall their way but you must give Wolves credit for that. There weren’t many situations in the game where the keeper was called on to make saves.

"Football is a part of life in general. We are part of society and like the rest of society we are a little depressed by what is going on at the moment and not least of all the terrible amount of hospitalisation and death we are suffering.

"We are still privileged and happy to be playing football. We have to be very careful before we start lamenting that life is hard."

  5. 'That was a monumental effort'published at 22:05 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2021

    Aston Villa 1-4 Liverpool

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Mark Delaney to BT Sport: "We are all very proud as a club, as coaches and players. That was a monumental effort considering what the players have had to go through.

"We deserved to go in at 1-1. It was a good goal.

"We knew they'd have a lot of ball and the potential of conceding early goals. We reacted very well and stuck together. We didn't give them too much territory.

"We thought maybe one or two bits of quality and we might get something and we did. Three or four passes and a lovely through ball.

"We know Louie Barry is a goal scorer and he took it ever so well. We see it every day. To do it on this stage against a quality team, he showed real composure.

"We are a very young group in the 23s. We do concede early goals sometimes. We showed a togetherness."

  6. 'When I celebrated everything came out of me'published at 22:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2021

    Aston Villa 1-4 Liverpool

    Aston Villa

Villa goalscorer Louie Barry, aged 17: "I knew I had it when I saw it... the ball in the back of the net is proudest I've been. Family screaming at the TV. I was just happy to score - hope I score many more.

"I was working very hard. When I celebrated everything came out of me. Relief. It was quite good.

"I've never been so proud of a team - from start to finish we gave it our all. Credit to ourselves and the club.

"I was cramping up a bit towards the end. You have to get used to it. With age comes physicality and good mentality."

Did a bit of maths. Average age of all players involved for Villa today 18yrs 224d. Good showing for 16 players without a first team game against 16 players with 607 international appearances between them. Love to see Louie Barry in 5 years time.

    Aston Villa 1-4 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder James Milner speaking to BT Sport: "They're a good set of lads. They put a shift in. In the first half they got the goal to keep playing. We got the result in the end but not an ideal situation for our team.

"We had a situation where we got into areas but we didn't get the final ball - that has happened in the past few games.

"We needed to keep working hard and pushing things to get things right.

"We knew we had to do things better. We didn't get it right, especially for their goal.

"One of their lads said he hadn't played for two months."

I support a League One club and a few of those Villa players are worth taking a look at for a loan spell.
