  1. 'Blades to finally have something to celebrate'published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

A few of the teams struggling near the bottom of the Premier League have got games against teams in the bottom half of League One.

West Brom look like a dog's dinner in defence at the moment but they should have enough about them to beat a Blackpool side who have just started to struggle a bit.

Sheffield United have not won a game all season but surely Saturday is the day they finally get something to celebrate on their coach journey home. I am a fan of Bristol Rovers boss Paul Tisdale, but the Blades will get through if they play anything like their best team - they should do, too.

This is Burnley's first game under their new ownership so I am sure Clarets boss Sean Dyche will want to prove a point against MK Dons, and continue his side's recent revival.

Predictions: Blackpool 1-2 West Brom; Bristol Rovers 0-2 Sheffield United; Burnley 2-0 MK Dons

    Luton v Reading (12:00 GMT)

The cardboard cut-out fans are out in force at Luton, including a picture of a whippet in a flat cap, shirt and tie. Already feels like quite a passe solution to empty stands, such has been the length of time supporters have been excluded from most stadiums.

Feels even more stark on FA Cup third-round weekend.

    Luton v Reading (12:00 GMT)

Here are the team's for the tie between Luton and Reading. Good luck trying to pick them out during the game if the morning fog doesn't disappear...

Luton retain only two of the players who started their last game - goalkeeper Simon Sluga and midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe. The likes of top-scorer James Collins and Harry Cornick are rested, with Danny Hylton, James Bree and young defender Gabriel Osho given chance to stake a claim.

Luton XI: Sluga, Bree, Osho, Tunnicliffe, Potts, Galloway, Moncur, Lee, Morrell, Nombe, Hylton.

Subs: Cornick, Berry, Lockyer, Rea, Mpanzu, Clark, Isted, Norrington-Davies, LuaLua.

Reading also make nine changes, resting a host of key first-team players. They are also without Lucas Joao, who has 16 goals in 18 games.

Tom McIntyre and Sone Aluko keep their place in an XI that includes exciting midfield talent Michael Olise. There is a debuts for Oli Pendlebury in midfield and first starts for Jeriel Dorsett and Jayden Onen.

Reading: Southwood, Tomas Esteves, McIntyre, Dorsett, Bristow, Semedo, Pendlebury, Aluko, Onen, Olise, Baldock.

Subs: Holmes, Tetek, Samuels, Melvin-Lambert, Boyce-Clarke, Lawless, Camara.

Nottingham Forest v Cardiff City (12:00 GMT)

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris has made fewer changes than his counterpart Chris Hughton, but this is probably a bigger game for the under-pressure Bluebirds boss.

He's not helped by a central defensive crisis with Sean Morrison, Sol Bamba, Aden Flint and Greg Cunningham all injured.

Academy graduate Joel Bagan is drafted in to start and either he or Joe Bennett will likely fill-in at centre back.

Cardiff goalkeeper Dillon Phillips makes his Bluebirds debut with Harris naming only seven substitutes.

Nottingham Forest v Cardiff City (12:00 GMT)

Chris Hughton makes eight changes from the side who beat Preston last weekend in the Championship.

Jordan Smith makes a first start of the season in goal and Scott McKenna makes his return from an ankle injury in defence.

Anthony Knockaert's loan was not extended in time for him to feature today, while it seems Hughton will switch to a 4-4-2.

  12. Digne returns for Evertonpublished at 11:33 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Everton v Rotherham (12:00 GMT)

As Carlo Ancelotti intimated yesterday, Lucas Digne returns for Everton. The full-back has recovered quicker than expected from surgery to give the Toffees a big boost not only today but going forward this season. James Rodriguez is also included in what is a changed, but not entirely unrecognisable Everton XI.

There is no Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison, though, with Cenk Tosun trusted to do a job up top.

Everton XI: Olsen, Coleman, Digne, Keane, Godfrey, Gomes, Gordon, Iwobi, Davies, Rodriguez, Tosun.

Rotherham also make a few changes from their last league game, but retain the core of their first-choice side.

    Chorley v Derby (12:15 GMT)

The sun's shining and things are looking good at Chorley, where the staff have been putting in the hours to ensure this game goes ahead.

I can barely see a thing out the window here in Salford. Hopefully the fog lifts before Manchester United and Watford kick off at Old Trafford later.

  15. Non-League hopespublished at 11:26 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

A difficult situation for Derby County, but what an opportunity for Chorley to make the fourth round.

How many sides from outside the top four tiers might we see in the pot?

Third round debutants Boreham Wood, 11th in the National League, host Championship side Millwall at midday and Stockport County host three-time winners West Ham United at Edgeley Park on Monday night.

Undoubtedly the tie of the round, however, is eighth-tier Marine's home match against Jose Mourinho's Tottenham on Sunday...

  16. No play at St Mary'spublished at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Southampton P-P Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town did not have enough fit, non-isolating players to face Southampton at St Mary's today, after a significant number of players and staff tested positive for coronavirus.

A decision on what will happen with the fixture will be made "early next week".

It is, of course, not the only tie affected.

Like Aston Villa last night, Championship side Derby County will have to field a team of under-23 and under-18 players against non-league Chorley following an outbreak.

  20. 'Special' Traore goal sends Wolves throughpublished at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Wolves 1-0 Crystal Palace

And in Friday's other FA Cup third round tie, Wolves beat Crystal Palace 1-0 thanks to a goal their manager Nuno Espirito Santo described as "a special goal from a special player".

Adama Traore ended his goal drought in style, as his excellent strike from the edge of the penalty area proved decisive at Molineux.

The Spain winger had not scored for Wolves since 27 February 2020, but that finish earned a 'wow' from his boss in the dugout.
