Atletico Madrid moved three points clear at the top of La Liga thanks to a 2-0 victory at third-placed Real Sociedad.

Mario Hermoso's header broke the deadlock early in the second half before Marcos Llorente's cool finish sealed victory for Diego Simeone's men.

Atletico, who have conceded just five goals in 13 league games this term, comfortably kept an eighth clean sheet. Real Madrid could draw level on points if they beat Granada on Wednesday but will have played two games more.

Zinedine Zidane's Real are the only side to have inflicted a domestic defeat on Atletico this season and Sociedad rarely looked like becoming the second.

Their only shot on target came late on and Atletico keeper Jan Oblak was equal to Martin Merquelanz's strike from just outside the box to preserve the visitors' impressive defensive record.

GOAL - Real Valladolid 0-2 Barcelonapublished at 35 mins

    Martin Braithwaite

Real Valladolid just can't control Lionel Messi. There are three defenders around him but he still manages to flick the ball down the line with the outside of his foot for Serginho Dest, who fizzes in a low ball across the six-yard box from the right flank and Martin Braithwaite slides it into the net.

    This one looks done already.

  6. Postpublished at 34 mins

    Real Valladolid 0-1 Barcelona

A free-kick for Barcelona with Lionel Messi on it from 35 yards out. He tries to loft it forward for Ronald Araujo charging forward, but Messi puts too much on it and it sails over Araujo's head and out of play.

  7. Thinking of Waguepublished at 28 mins

    Real Valladolid 0-1 Barcelona

A nice touch from the Barcelona players when celebrating the goal as they run to the bench and hold up a Barcelona shirt with the name Wague on it.

It's a tribute to 22-year-old Senegal right-back Moussa Wague, who is on loan from Barca at Greek club PAOK, but suffered a career-threatening knee injury recently, with him set to be out of action for at least eight months.

  8. goal

GOAL - Real Valladolid 0-1 Barcelonapublished at 21 mins

    Clement Lenglet

Lionel Messi is the architect as his floated ball to the middle is met by a thumping header by the returning Clement Lenglet who gets there first ahead of defender Javi Sanchez and powers the ball into the net from six yards out.

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 21:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2020

So close to a history-making goal for Lionel Messi. He plays a one-two with Pedri and Messi curls goalwards and the ball is going into the top corner before Jordi Masip tips it over the bar.

  10. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Real Valladolid 0-0 Barcelona

Real Valladolid are defending narrowly and in numbers. The ball is played into the feet of Lionel Messi and he tries to flick it towards Martin Braithwaite but the pair aren't on the same wavelength and the ball goes harmlessly out of play.

  11. Atletico move three points clearpublished at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2020

Earlier today, Sevilla moved above Barcelona and into fifth as they gained a 1-0 away win at Valencia with former Liverpool man scoring an 81st-minute winner.

Relegation-threatened Osasuna remain in the bottom threw as they drew 2-2 at Elche.

Atletico Madrid have a three-point advantage over city rivals Real at the top after goals from Mario Hermoso and Marcos Llorente gave Atletico a 2-0 win on the road against Real Sociedad.

That win for Atletico means Barcelona are ELEVEN points off the top.

  12. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    Real Valladolid 0-0 Barcelona

A chance at both ends. Nacho shoots straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen before Frenkie de Jong links up with Lionel Messi, who hits it first time from the edge of the penalty area but it curls just wide.

  13. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Real Valladolid 0-0 Barcelona

A big call to go with ex-Middlesbrough man Martin Braithwaite in place of World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann. It's not often Griezmann is left out.

And Koeman has changed his tactics with Barcelona set to line up in a 3-5-2 formation with Lionel Messi and Martin Braithwaite the two front men.

  20. Draw with Valencia not good enough - Koemanpublished at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2020

The 2-2 draw with Valencia on Saturday meant Barcelona have won less than half of their 13 La Liga matches in 2020-21 and boss Ronald Koeman was not happy.

He said: "You score twice, you’re the winning team in the second half and you need to be a little bit more concentrated to see what will happen.

“We controlled the game, we had good opportunities to score the third, but then you have to understand maybe 2-1 is the maximum.

“One or two moments in the defensive way, not to have the full concentration in doing what we need to do at that point, and they scored the second one. And after that it was not good enough.”
