Amid that frantic spell, Emile Smith Rowe did replace Reiss Nelson. The young playmaker hasn't had much chance to get on the ball though as it is Newcastle who are dominating possession and territory at the moment.

The game is getting a little bit stretched now. I don't think either manager would appreciate extra time.

    He's taking oxygen on board.

Sam Folarin is warming up on the touchline and will be coming on.

Kassim Patel: How bad is Willian though.

Bring on Shearer and Wright. They could still liven up this game, even in their Peaky Blinders outfits. Who wouldn't want to see that?

Chance for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the other end! Mohamed Elneny threads a lovely pass into the path of the Gunners forward and he clips it over the onrushing Martin Dubravka but wide of the target.

    Andy Reid
Ex-Republic of Ireland midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Carroll should have scored. He a long way onside and that is a really big miss.

He has been good, has been a handful and it came to him nicely on his left foot. You are just waiting for the back of the net to ripple there, but it is a poor miss.

  10. Postpublished at 59 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Andy Carroll is involved in everything at the moment. He gathers the ball on the turn, halfway inside the Arsenal half, doesn't fancy his chances of beating David Luiz for pace so opts to have a dig from distance instead, but it's well closed down.

  11. Postpublished at 57 mins

Newcastle have been the better team since the break.

Goalscorer Aaron Rowe is having a good time. He gets away on the right and forces another save from the Plymouth keeper but it's a fairly comfortable one. Hit straight at him.

Andy Carroll was in there again. Poor clearance from Kieran Tierney. He's actually onside. Wow. Best chance of the evening.

  15. CLOSE!published at 56 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Arsenal are giving away free-kicks in dangerous positions. They're even more dangerous when you have Andy Carroll lurking in the box.

Matt Ritchie's ball floats over everyone but it's turned back in and an unmarked Carroll fires wide of an almost open goal. Somehow!

He's flagged offside, but the replay shows the forward was on - it would have stood.

What a chance for the visitors.

    Panutche Camara (42 mins)

    Decent half!

Danny Mayor tees up Panutche Camara inside the box and he lifts it into the roof of the net from the centre.

    This could go either way.

That goal has woken Middlesbrough up a bit. They are pressing high and Luke Daniels has to hastily clear it under pressure from Chuba Akpom.

Fizzing effort from Andy Carroll, and Bernd Leno has to be alert to stop it.

The Newcastle forward is such a nuisance and brings the ball down on his chest before unleashing a right-footed effort from the edge of the box.

  20. 'We avoided big consequences'published at 18:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Bristol Rovers 2-3 Sheffield United

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder: "I am pleased for the players and most importantly the supporters.

"I think we have seen a performance today that wasn't free-flowing. It was always going to be a tough cup tie, away from home and not being in form at all. It was against a team with nothing to lose and we had everything to lose today.

"Everybody in the country would have sniffed this. Every expert, pundit and supporter wouldn't have been surprised if we were turned over today. But there was a good attitude.

"This was a big day for us, because of what's happened, it's been a tough week. This was a big fixture and a big result, it won't feel like that to anybody but hopefully we can build on it.

"The consequences of not getting a result today would have really impacted on the group. The players have taken a lot. A lot of players there played in the Championship when we went up. There are young players out there as well and when you don't get results it does test everybody out."
