  5. goal

GOAL: Brentford 3-2 Bristol Citypublished at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2021

    Nahki Wells (90 mins)

    Surely not?...

Brentford are a bit sloppy in possession at the back and Bristol City turn it over.

It actually looks as though the chance goes begging but, as Tyreeq Bakinson is tackled, the ball squirms through to Nahki Wells and he rounds the goalkeeper to score.

Wells was in an offside position, but it's not completely clear who it came off last before landing to him.

    Brentford 3-1 Bristol City

After a ball into the Bristol City box, Ivan Toney is appealing for a penalty after being beaten to the ball by Alfie Mawson.

Shortly after, Toney does win a free-kick around 30 yards out but Mathias Jensen's free-kick is straight at the goalkeeper.

Ivan Toney looking every bit a man who's scored 20 goals already this season.

As the ball breaks to him around 35 yards out, he spots Daniel Bentley off his line and tries to chip the former Brentford keeper.

But it's a bit too optimistic and drifts.

    Brentford 3-1 Bristol City

But Bristol City, to their credit, do continue to give it a good crack. They've certainly given a half-decent account of themselves, they've just been undone by three pieces of quality from one of the very best teams in the league.

If they can pull one back they'd keep it interesting, though...

    Brentford 3-1 Bristol City

Brentford are just showing one or two signs they could cut loose here.

Sergi Canos, Ivan Toney, Saman Ghoddos and Tariqe Fosu are just such a threat on the break that even when the Robins begin to build some pressure the Bees almost look the more dangerous.

    Saman Ghoddos (65 mins)

    Told you!

After some more really slick build-up play from the hosts, Saman Ghoddos slams an effort against the angle of post and bar.

But, as Bristol City's luck would have it, he gets a second bite of the cherry because it falls straight back to him and he finds the corner.

    Done and dusted?

But the set-piece is cleared and the Bees remain in control.

I still don't fancy this to finish 2-1, mind you.

Meanwhile, Bristol City have a corner. They're still plugging away, the Robins...

Here's confirmation, then, of how it's shaping up at the bottom after Rotherham's win over Derby.

It's certainly a result that keeps the Rams well and truly in the thick of the relegation battle.

A win for Derby would've pulled them six points clear of danger.

Although they could - and maybe even should - have just conceded a third.

After Sergi Canos' low cross is only half cleared, Saman Ghoddos finds himself with the ball at his feet eight yards from goal... but completely skews his effort.

That was a better chance than he made it look.

Where do Bristol City go from here, then?

Off the back of five successive defeats, and a particularly limp performance at Derby on Saturday, could they end up folding as Wycombe did so spectacularly?

I actually think Dean Holden will have seen enough from his team in the opening 55 minutes to believe there's still life in the game yet.

What a result this is for Rotherham, who close the gap to Derby to two points and give their survival chances a significant boost.

  19. goal

GOAL: Brentford 2-1 Bristol Citypublished at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2021

    Ivan Toney (50 mins)

    Superb goal.

Ivan Toney's had a quiet evening so far, but this is where he is so, so good.

Tariqe Fosu is again the provider down the Brentford left, shifting the ball and then whipping in a perfect cross for Toney to emphatically finish at the near post.

The Bees have come from behind to lead.

  20. Postpublished at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2021

    Brentford 1-1 Bristol City

And Bristol City have started the second half like they started the first - on the attack.

After some excellent work from Antoine Semenyo, Adam Nagy's dummy allows Zak Vyner to get a shot towards goal but it's turned behind for a corner.

    The set-piece is easily claimed.
