Of all the places for Nigel Pearson to rock up and take a look at his new Bristol City side in action, it had to be a club where he was feted as an all-action defensive rock of a skipper: Middlesbrough.

Nottingham-born Pearson was a real favourite at Boro, some achievement given their usual heroes are either born on the banks of the Tees or are Brazilian stars like Juninho.

Coincidentally, Pearson is just the type of centre-half that latter-day Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock would have lapped up at the Riverside - dominant, good in the air and a salt-of-the-earth leader.

Warnock will have to hope Boro can clip the visitors' wings in front of their new gaffer, who will be bird-watching a Robins side, on a run of six defeats, from the stands.
