  1. 'We can raise a few eyebrows'published at 12:22 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

Northern Ireland's Lauren Wade is hoping she and her team-mates can "raise a few eyebrows" against England.

"We are under no illusions, playing England is a challenge but this is why we play the game - we want to challenge ourselves at the highest level.

"There has been a lot of chat around the Olympics. Firstly, we are here to represent Northern Ireland and hopefully get a performance. Then you never know, a few girls could step up and maybe raise a few eyebrows.

"I think we are fearless and excited to be playing England. Of course, as a player you have those little nerves before a game, that is just normal, but everyone is here to play the best they can against some of the best players in the world.

"We have created history by reaching the Euro play-offs but this is going to test how far we have come as a team, and we are all really excited for the challenge."

The Olympic Games are just months away but the Great Britain women's football team are yet to confirm a head coach.

They will have just two training camps to prepare for the tournament under a new boss.

It is not ideal preparation but following Phil Neville's departure as England coach, the Football Association can finally start making plans.

  4. Team GB chance for NI playerspublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

Interim England boss Hege Riise says the Northern Ireland players may see the game as a chance to play themselves into contention for a Team GB place at the Tokyo Olympics.

"Of course it's a great opportunity for us to see players and for us to make up our minds," she said.

"We don't know exactly. I have seen different styles - three at the back and four at the back.

"So we prepare for 4-2-3-1, and we know their central line is very experienced so we know they will have pride going into the game."

  7. Why are there so few BAME players?published at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

With Demi Stokes injured and Nikita Parris unable to travel because of Covid-19 restrictions - there will be only one non-white player in the England squad of 21.

Bristol City forward Ebony Salmon has been handed her first senior England call-up, after the initial all-white squad was announced.

Compared with the men's game, the pool of BAME players to choose from in women's football is a lot smaller.

At the Women's World Cup in 2019, Stokes and Parris were the only non-white players in the England squad. In the men's World Cup squad the year before, there were 13 players of colour - celebrated as "representing modern, multicultural England".

  8. 'We will try to show courage'published at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels say he is looking forward to seeing how his part-time players match up against "the might of England".

Shiels' side will use the game as preparation for their two-legged Euro 2022 play-off in April against a yet-to-be-named opponent.

"We do know that we have girls who are nurses, work in B&Q and Lidl and all those things, so they're not going to be conditioned the way English players are," Shiels said.

"That's a major disadvantage, but we're taking that hit and we're going to try and show some courage to take on the might of England. That's what we're doing.

"I'm sure we will benefit from that and then we take it into the next game, which will be a real tough one also."

  10. Scott memories ahead of 150thpublished at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

Jill Scott's 150th England cap has been a long time coming.

With the coronavirus pandemic preventing the Lionesses playing any competitive games since a 1-0 loss to Spain in March last year, it's been an almost 12-month wait since the 34-year-old's 149th game.

When Scott lines up in Tuesday's friendly against Northern Ireland she will become only the second player to reach 150 caps for the Lionesses.

Here Scott reflects on an international career that has spanned almost 15 years and incorporated four World Cups.

  11. Shiels opts for experiencepublished at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

    Andy Gray
    BBC Sport NI reporter

When Northern Ireland last faced England in Euro 2009 qualifying every player in the squad was from the Irish League. It's a sign of the team's progress that six of the starting XI this time out play their club football in England.

Simone Magill and Rachel Furness - from the blue and red halves of Merseyside - will be the key goal threats along with former Glasgow City winger Lauren Wade. Kenny Shiels' expansive style of football has also pushed Birmingham City midfielder Chloe McCarron on leaps and bounds.

Julie Nelson and Sarah McFadden, two stalwarts of NI's last meeting with England, look set to make up the centre-back partnership. Traditionally a central midfielder, the ever-reliable McFadden was a striker in 2008 but has featured at the heart of Shiels' defence and at full back when called upon.

It's an experienced starting team but a youthful bench which contains eight players aged 20 or younger - most notably defender Ella Haughey who could make her senior debut at the age of 16.

  12. Nobbs and Magill returnpublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

England interim manager Hege Riise's first line-up includes Arsenal midfielder Jorndan Nobbs and Houston Dash's Rachel Daly.

Manchester City midfielder Kiera Walsh isn't in the squad due to a thigh injury which will be assessed by the club.

Her in-form team-mate Chloe Kelly is a surprise exclusion from the starting XI - she's on the bench - while on-loan Everton midfielder Jill Scott captains the side on her 150th appearance.

England XI: Roebuck, Bronze, Greenwood, Stanway, Houghton, Williamson, Daly, Scott (C), White, Nobbs, Hemp.

Subs: MacIver, Toone, Wubben-Moy, Turner, Kelly, Mead, England, Salmon, Hampton

Birmingham Ciy defender Rebecca Holloway is handed her first senior cap for Northern Ireland by manager Kenny Shiels.

There is also a return for Everton forward Simone Magill, who missed the final two qualifiers because of injury.

Sisters Kirsty and Caitlin McGuinness are unavailable for selection and Demi Vance misses out with a knee injury. Sixteen-year-old Ella Haughey is on the bench.

Northern Ireland XI: Flaherty, McFadden, Nelson, McCarron, Callaghan (C), Magill, Furness, Wade, Magee, Caldwell, Holloway.

Subs: Burrows, McKenna, Hutton, Finnegan, Kelly, McDaniel, Wilson, Howe, Haughey, Watling, Clifford.

  13. Hello!published at 11:59 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2021

England v Northern Ireland (12:30 GMT)

England are back in action (finally!) for the first time since March last year and they are being led by interim boss Hege Riise.

They take on a Northern Ireland side who completed their final four Euro 2022 qualifying group games and beat the Faroe Islands 5-1 in December to clinch a play-off place.

It's a "friendly" by name but hopefully there's a bit of spice... Kick-off is half an hour away and it's live on the BBC!
