Matt Doherty is now being booed by the Portugal fans.

    It's getting a bit spicy.

Now it's Andre Silva's turn to demand a penalty.

He races to the ball before Andrew Omobamidele and the RB Leipzig forward flings himself to the ground.

Again, the referee is unmoved and tells Silva to get on with it.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

Matt Doherty picks up a yellow card for time-wasting.

We're about to see at least one Irish substitution I think.

    Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

Oof, Bruno Fernandes with a looping effort. Gavin Bazunu springs to his left, but it goes just wide.

    Giving Bruno space? Dangerous game.

  5. No penaltypublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

Aaron Connolly wants a penalty, but the referee isn't interested.

It did look like he was looking for it to be fair, waiting for contact from Joao Cancelo, but it was a great run from the Brighton man to create the chance in the first place.

Benhard Naweseb: Let's be honest, Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes don't fit playing in the same team.

Bruno staying on the penalties at Old Trafford maybe?

  7. Postpublished at 20:58 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

Portugal are really pushing for that equaliser.

Bruno Fernandes is the latest to pop up on the edge of the area, but skews his shot wide.

It's been a frustrating night for the Manchester United talisman.

France are down to 10 men at home to Bosnia with Jules Kounde, who Chelsea failed to sign from Sevilla last month, sent off for a dangerous foul on Sead Kolasinac.

It was initially a yellow card but VAR upgraded it to a red. It's 1-1 in Strasbourg.

    Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

Andre Silva's first act is to win a corner.

Bruno Fernandes takes it but Adam Idah blocks Silva's attempt.

Take two: Jeff Hendrick flicks it away and there's big Shane Duffy, throwing himself at a shot.

Bodies are hitting the floor, kind of like watching a tables, ladders and chairs match...

  10. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20:52 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

    We're underway again.

Andre Silva comes on for Rafa Silva, who was fairly quiet there...

HT: Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

The Republic have been hugely impressive. Sharp, incisive and hungry, they're not letting their World Cup dream go just yet.

Credit has to go to Gavin Bazunu after that penalty save, but the Irish have looked very shaky when trying to play out from the back.

Just pump it long, lads. Protect the lead.

Harry McCrea: Are Ireland... winning a football match? Having scored a goal?

Tom Harrington, Roundhay: Great performance by us so far - would like to see Troy Parrott on in the second half as we would need another one against this team.

It's 1-1 at half-time in two of the biggest qualifiers of the evening. The Netherlands are drawing in Norway, with France are level against Bosnia. Both sides had to come from behind.

In the Republic's group, Luxembourg lead Azerbaijan 2-0.

Eran Zahavi has scored twice as Israel are 2-0 up against the Faroe Islands.

The Slov derby is 1-1 between Enia and Akia.

Russia v Croatia, Latvia v Gibraltar and Moldova v Austria are 0-0. It's not half-time yet in that last game because a drone delayed kick-off.

Malta are 1-0 up against 10-man Cyprus and Turkey lead Montenegro 2-1.

Is that it? Almost - Scotland are 2-0 down in Denmark.

I'm assuming the second half will be just as chaotic, so I'm running downstairs to make myself an espresso.

Oh, and the dog needs fed.

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

    Portugal 0-1 Republic of Ireland

    Aaaaand breathe.

That was wild. It started ominously for the Irish when Portugal were awarded a 15th-minute penalty after Jeff Hendrick's foul on Bruno Fernandes.

Cristiano Ronaldo, on the cusp of a world record, stepped up but saw his kick brilliantly saved by Gavin Bazunu.

Portugal also struck a post through Diogo Jota but John Egan's brilliant header has the Republic in front at the break.

Breathless stuff in the Algarve heat.

He's at it again, is Jota, fizzing a shot just wide.

He's such a livewire. He's certainly offered more of a threat than a certain world record-chasing 36-year-old who's just signed for Manchester United...

  19. Postpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

Diogo Jota drills a low shot towards goal. Gavin Bazunu saves, but it wriggles underneath his body...

He manages to reclaim the ball though.

    Irish hearts in mouths.
