    Helen Ward
Wales' all-time record scorer on BBC Radio Wales

I’m not unhappy, the first few minutes it was ropey and Wales struggled to get their foot on the ball, but they have grown into it.

  2. CLOSE!published at 17 mins

    Czech Republic 0-0 Wales

    Oh no.

    Huge, huge miss from Wales.

Dan James and Kieffer Moore go clear, it's a two on one and James slips it to Moore, but his shot is saved.

They just took too long, it was ponderous.

    Had to be a goal.

    Czech Republic 0-0 Wales

Czech Republic build-up to a crossing opportunity, but Joe Roden sees the ball safely out for a goal-kick.

Rob Page won't be unhappy with what he's seen so far.

Daniel James cuts inside and fires at goal, but the effort is miles off target.

It was, however, a very encouraging run.

I was thinking about Aaron Ramsey, just for the sake of clarity.

You can see it, can't you? We already know he looks good in black and white.

Remember when you could watch a game of football and not think about every big name player on the field 'I wonder if they will sign for Newcastle?'

    Me neither!

    Nathan Blake
Former Wales striker on BBC Radio Wales

I think it’s been a decent start from Wales.

They need to just get out and have that confidence, have a few attacks and get a free-kick or a corner.

  8. Shock on the cards in Germany?published at 19:56 British Summer Time 8 October 2021

Scenes in Hamburg as Rangers' Ianis Hagi has put Romania ahead against Germany.

He nutmegs Antonio Rudiger before poking the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

That came less than a minute after Germany had a penalty overturned by VAR.

Referee Deniz Aytekin seems intent on stamping his authority on proceedings.

I'm not saying he likes to be the centre of attention but this is the kind of content you'll find on his Instagram page.

A strong run by Ethan Ampadu into the box, but his penalty appeal is waved away by referee Deniz Aytekin.

    Speaking of Mr Aytekin...

  11. CLOSE!published at 8 mins

A first chance as Patrik Schick's fine footwork creates an opening for Jakub Pesek, but his shot across goal is saved by Danny Ward who gathers at the second attempt.

  12. Postpublished at 6 mins

Neco Williams just popped up in an area that would have given Ben Davies a nosebleed, but the Czechs were able to clear.

A very even game so far.

  13. 'He does catch him'published at 5 mins

    Czech Republic 0-0 Wales

    Helen Ward
Wales' all-time record scorer on BBC Radio Wales

He does catch him, but there is no intent in it. In this day and age you don’t get away with those I suppose.

  14. Postpublished at 4 mins

Wales looking to get a foothold. The long ball to Kieffer Moore is at least an outlet to keep them up the pitch, but they will hope for more possession.

  15. Postpublished at 2 mins

Dan James could also have been booked for kicking the ball away, but the referee believes his plea that he didn't hear the whistle for offside.

Perhaps he's seen that video of James getting a puppy and just believes he's very wholesome and would not lie.

  16. YELLOW CARDpublished at 1 mins

    Czech Republic 0-0 Wales

Aaron Ramsey picks up a yellow card for jumping with his arms within 30 seconds. Not an ideal start.

  17. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

    Czech Republic 0-0 Wales

The Wales players take a knee before kick-off (and are booed for doing so) after a group huddle and German referee Deniz Aytekin gets us under way in Prague.

A big, big night for Wales. They have to deliver or their path to the World Cup gets ever trickier.

Wales are in yellow, Czech Republic are in white, which makes you wonder why Wales can't just play in red, but there we are.
