  • Rangers will host Celtic in the last 16

  • Defoe spanks in from 25 yards, Roofe adds quickfire double, then Patterson adds fourth

  • Cove's Masson off with serious-looking injury

  1. Defoe off, Stewart onpublished at 72mins

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

Jermain Defoe is replaced with Greg Stewart and the former England striker will probably be disappointed not to have added to his opening goal given the chances he has had.

Meanwhile, Scott Wright continues to impress and fires a snap shot wide.

  2. Sub Itten immediately threatenspublished at 70mins

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

Cedric Itten has come on for two-goal Kemar Roofe and the Swiss striker is already burrowing away inside the Cove penalty box looking to notch one himself.

So far, though, the Aberdeen side are managing to keep the scoreline down to a respectable level considering the half-time score.

    Ouch!published at 62mins

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

Cove midfielder Jamie Masson goes down in pain inside his own penalty box as his studs catch on the turf trying to repel Nathan Patterson's charge into the penalty box.

It looks a bad one for the 27-year-old former Aberdeen youth and the stretcher is called on to the field.

Every time I've watched Bassey, he's impressed me. He's quick and extremely strong, it just so happens he has a Croatian international ahead of him

  8. Postpublished at 60mins

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

Scott Wright shows some nimble feet as he confuses marker Ross Graham before sending in a low cross that Kemar Roofe can only turn past the post from a couple of yards out under pressure.

    Quote Message

Rangers are moving the ball so well. Fatigue looks to be setting in among the Cove players even after just 50-odd minutes

  10. Postpublished at 53mins

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

Rangers are peppering that Cove penalty box with passes and, when the ball deflects off a defender, Jermain Defoe has a clear sight at goal but lashes well over from 16 yards.

The veteran striker had fired straight at goalkeeper Stuart McKenzie moments earlier and is pushing for his second goal of the game.

  11. McAllister on for Megginsonpublished at 47mins

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

Cove have also made a change, with Rory McAllister, who has himself scored plenty in the lower leagues after starting out with Aberdeen, replacing Mitch Megginson up front.

Manager Paul Hartley is obviously saving his captain for Tuesday's league game against Clyde unless Megginson has also picked up an injury.

Meanwhile, it is Rangers back on the attack...

  12. KICK-OFF SECOND HALFpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

Cove get the second half under way and will be concerned to see Rangers manager Steven Gerrard making a forward-looking change that suggests he wants plenty more goals.

On comes Ianis Hagi, the Romania attacking midfielder, in place of the more conservative Steven Davis.

  13. Cove 'could lose 10'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

    Richard Foster
Partick Thistle defender on BBC Radio Scotland

    Quote Message

Cove are too predictable and, when Rangers see that, it is easy to defend against and just push up. They have to vary it and play the ball long sometimes. They can lose 10 if they don't do something

  14. Defoe and Roofe eyeing hat-tricks?published at 19:27 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

    HT: Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

    Charlie Adam
Former Rangers midfielder on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

I don't think Rangers will make many changes as they will be wanting to score more goals and Defoe and Roofe will be eyeing a hat-trick. Cove have a big league game on Tuesday and will probably make changes

It's been an Easter Parade of goals and it is just up to the Glasgow Rangers how many they want to score here

  16. 'Cove playing into Rangers' hands'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

    Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangers

    Richard Foster

    Quote Message

If you're a League 1 club coming to Rangers, you're not going to out-pass them. It's such a poor fourth goal to lose

  17. HALF-TIME Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangerspublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

We can already safely say that it will be Rangers at home to Celtic in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup.

Cove came to Ibrox in good form and with hopes of making it a frustrating night and maybe capitalising on Steven Gerrard's decision to make a host of changes to his first-choice line-up.

However, from the moment Jermain Defoe opened the scoring, there was an air of inevitability about how it would go and a double from Kemar Roofe and a Nathan Patterson strike have the Glasgow side well on their way to a thumping win.

    Quote Message

Sometimes, you just need to stick your foot through the ball and get rid of it, don't be playing around the back

  19. GOAL! Rangers 4-0 Cove Rangerspublished at 43mins

    Nathan Patterson

Cove pay the price for trying to play fancy possession football inside their own penalty box.

Nathan Patterson nicks the ball and the teenage Rangers right-back is clinical with his low finish into the far corner.

It's now just a question of how embarrassing this can become for the League 1 part-timers.
