The Scottish Cup's opening last-16 ties threatened a shock or two before the Premiership teams prevailed, with plenty of drama along the way.

We'll be back tomorrow morning with Kilmarnock v Montrose kicking off a packed day of action from the cup and lower leagues.

• Rangers/Celtic v St Johnstone/Clyde
• Stranraer/Hibernian v Motherwell

It was far from convincing but all three top-flight teams in Scottish Cup action tonight are now through to the quarter-finals.

Here are the potential opponents for St Mirren, Dundee Utd and Motherwell.

Forfar interim player-manager Gary Irvine tells BBC Scotland: "We were organised, the efforts of the lads I can't fault them. We had our chances and it's a fine line and we needed to be more clinical.

"This is a lift for us. We're up against tough opposition and showed we can compete if we show belief and work hard for each other.

"We'll definitely take positives out of this going into Tuesday [against Clyde]."

Dundee United manager Micky Mellon tells BBC Scotland: "Just glad to go through. We needed to do a professional job and we've done that.

"We just had to keep plugging away and we knew eventually that bit of quality would tell."

They now face a trip to either Aberdeen or Livingston in the next round.

"It'll be a great tie against either," says Mellon.

Dundee United match-winner Peter Pawlett tells BBC Scotland: "At times we should be better in the final third but we're through to the next round, that's all that matters.

"The goal, it was a bit of a sclaff, but I'll take that one.

"We just need to take care with the ball more at times.

"We've got an opportunity now, we want to get as far as we can. Aberdeen or Livingston, it's going to be tough, but we're looking forward to it."

Peter Pawlett's goal spared Dundee United's blushes as they made heavy weather of beating League 1 Forfar.

Forfar, without a home league win in over 14 months, were the better side for much of the first half. But Micky Mellon's Premiership charges breathed a huge sigh of relief as Pawlett eventually broke the deadlock.

United now visit either Aberdeen or Livingston in the last eight.

Motherwell keeper Liam Kelly saves from Sean McGinty in the shootout as the hosts squeeze through to the Scottish Cup last eight after a huge scare against the Championship strugglers.

Stephen O'Donnell scored the decisive penalty after his 35-yard opener looked to have won it in the final minutes of extra time.

Markus Fjortoft's last-gasp header took the tie the distance, but it's agony in the end for Morton.
