  1. 'The way it has been handled has been abysmal'published at 22:14 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Aston Villa and Liverpool defender talking to BBC Sport

It just shows you, people will go against the clubs, turn against them. The owners have to be very very careful now. Expect a backlash when they come back to grounds - rightly so, because you've gone against them. You've thought that they wanted to go a certain way without consulting them. It's been abysmal the way it was handled. You’re seeing the power of the fans. Don't forget football players are fans. They know what it feels like to be a fan and understand the connection between the players, fans, the club so im abs delighted tonight that it’s finally fallen down and it’s started to unravel.

The owners need to come out and do the right thing now and say we got this competition wrong. We apologise. We’re begging you for our forgiveness because that’s what they’ll have to do. It won't surprise me if certain clubs went up for sale now because of the pressure they'll come under. Some clubs, with US owners, they won't turn up to games for a very long time. They can shut off from this as much as they want. Across the atlantic, it's not a big issue for them. But the day you turn back up at Anfield or Man Utd or Arsenal, get ready for it because it’s coming and they have every right to give you down the barrels, the fans.

  2. I have never known anything like thispublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

I have been involved in football journalism a long time.

I have covered England managers resigning straight after games, ludicrous transfer requests that have been withdrawn, takeovers, administrations, last year allegations of a club being lost in a bet - wasn't true.

I have never known 60 hours like the last ones.

    Utterly amazing.

  3. Your 22:00 (mad) headlinespublished at 22:00

It's 2200 on this craziest of Tuesdays. (I think it's Tuesday anyway).

    - The European Super League is 5-0 down on aggregate and has leaked five away goals. Its captain is suspended for the second leg and it doesn't have a fit goalkeeper to field. (That's code for Manchester City are pulling out of the event and Chelsea will do likewise)

    - Ed Woodward will leave his role at Manchester United. (This is true). Conor McGregor says he may buy the club. (See our 21:56 entry. We think he is joking).

    - Other clubs in the proposed European Super League are now under huge pressure to exit. Liverpool's players have started posting social media posts stating they "don't want it to happen".

    - The UK government have backed the move by Chelsea and Manchester City and pledged to follow through on a fan-led review into English football, adding: "We must make sure this never happens again."

    - If all of the above wasn't enough, Chelsea fans protested outside their ground against the ESL move and got what they wanted within minutes. Placards, banners and bedsheets with protest slogans on them may never have been more efficient than they were tonight.

You're up to date. Embrace the rollercoaster.

  5. 'Words from elite members have been outstanding'published at 21:52 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Aston Villa and Liverpool defender talking to BBC Sport

The house has finally fallen. We've been waiting for this to happen. Last night was a big statement from Jurgen Klopp, James Milner, Patrick Bamford and Marcelo Bielsa was outstanding. Then we wanted a bigger reaction today and we got it. When we go to Pep Guardiola and his love of competition, being able to be relegated, win things, that's what sport’s about. Words from our elite members of our beloved game have been outstanding.

It's just shown the power of what the fans are to the game. How can we even think the fans aren't important after the season we've just had? There has been zero atmosphere and the quality of the game has dropped. Now we’re starting to see it all unravel and it’s great to see.

  7. 'The European Super League is dead'published at 21:46 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The European Super League is dead. It might not be officially yet, but it is dead. The longer you leave it if you're Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal or Spurs it just starts to feel a little bit ridiculous. It might mean a lot to their people, they might have been the partial architects for it, but it doesn't matter. You haven't got enough teams or backing. It seems like a daft idea in the first place, do the right thing and try and get some grace out of it.

  9. The latest on Barca & Atletico...published at 21:40 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Guillem Balague
    Spanish football journalist

Barcelona around two and a half hours ago started leaking to us 'we were into this, but it has to be approved by the season tickets holder assembly'.

When a board at Barcelona want something to go through it usually goes through. But this is their excuse to say we only signed on this provision.

I spoke to Atletico Madrid an hour or so ago and they said they don't expect anything to happen but things are moving quickly.

  10. 'Woodward has served with great distinction'published at 21:37 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

Manchester United co-chairman Joel Glazer has said the following about executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward leaving the club at the end of 2021: “Ed Woodward has served the club with great distinction. On behalf of everyone at United I would like to place on record our sincere thanks for his tireless work and dedication.

“His contribution to the club has been massive, and he will always be welcome at Old Trafford as a part of the Manchester United family.”

  12. Uefa president welcomes Man City withdrawalpublished at 21:34 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin has welcomed the withdrawal of Manchester City from the breakaway closed league project.

“I am delighted to welcome City back to the European football family," said Ceferin.

“They have shown great intelligence in listening to the many voices - most notably their fans - that have spelled out the vital benefits that the current system has for the whole of European football; from the world beating Champions League final right down to a young player’s first coaching session at a grassroots club.

“As I said at the Uefa Congress, it takes courage to admit a mistake but I have never doubted that they had the ability and common sense to make that decision.

“City are a real asset for the game and I am delighted to be working with them for a better future for the European game.”

  13. 'This great club will soon be lifting silverware again'published at 21:29 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

As promised here are some quotes from Ed Woodward:

“I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years.

“The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.

“I will treasure the memories from my time at Old Trafford, during a period when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. I am proud of the regeneration of the club’s culture and our return to the Manchester United way of playing.

"We have invested more than £1bn in the squad during my time here and I am particularly delighted with the progress the players have made under the astute leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching team in the last two years.

“I am sure that with the changes we have made on-field and to the coaching and football staff in recent years this great club will soon be lifting silverware again. It deserves to.

“I desperately wanted the club to win the Premier League during my tenure and I am certain that the foundations are in place for us to win it back for our passionate fans."

  16. '12 members to have Zoom meeting'published at 21:20 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Guillem Balague
    Spanish football journalist

I've spoke to Florentino Perez's entourage and he feels a little bit let down by everyone.

With the pressure around the idea, as it was, will now not take place. My understanding is that there will be a Zoom meeting with the 12 founding members and if that is the case we'll see the consequences.

  18. Some (mad) headlinespublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Your headlines at nine:

    - The shattering noise you heard outside is the European Super League trophy smashing to pieces. That's because Manchester City have withdrawn and Chelsea are close to doing so.

    - There is rumour on social media that some European teams will follow suit.

    - Ed Woodward is going to leave his role at Manchester United.

    - Chelsea fans protested (and then celebrated) outside Stamford Bridge as news of their club's exit from the ESL became clear. It may just be one of football's swiftest and most successful protests. Petr Cech turned out to try to encourage calm. All of this is true. It just reads like it's made up.

That's the 2100 bulletin. Goodness knows what 2200 will bring.

  19. 'The whole concept was bizarre'published at 20:58 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The league wasn’t going to be any different because we already see the best players in the world, there was just going to be no jeopardy. The whole concept was bizarre and as if it was dreamt up on a computer by nobody who had watched a game of football in their life.
