It will not have escaped your attention that the government even had to wade into this issue in recent days.

They said they'd do all they could to stop it happening (one less job to do now at least) and also that they'd start a fan-led review into football in this country off the back of this controversy.

So, what do they say now? That's next...

The real tragedy is if this is all forgotten about and it's back to business as usual. The top European leagues need to get together and agree fair play rules - including wage caps, then a mandated transition to the German ownership model.

One wonders how Andrew Agnelli deals with this at Juventus given how passionate he has been about starting a European Super League.

As things stand he's not budging but this is a damaging blow, as it is for the leaders of all 12 clubs involved.

  7. 'Still I am a little boy who just loves to play football'published at 20:49 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

There are so many good comments in this post from Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, that should resonate with a lot of you.

From the little boy who loves to play football, to keeping the fans dreaming.

    A top class, heartfelt post.

I'd love to know what Petr Cech was saying to Chelsea fans earlier this evening.

That, to me at least, looks like a heated debate over Line of Duty.

If you take away the "closed shop" aspect of the proposed Super League - is it actually a bad idea to have a premier European competition that has the best 20 teams and provides more top-level games?

David Gill's name is trending on Twitter. He of course once steered the Manchester United ship and it seems fans are keen for him to do so again now that Ed Woodward will be leaving.

That said, my Twitter page tells me the Real Madrid president believes the European Super League will "save football", so who knows what to take in these days.

It's all mayhem right now. Carnage, debate, anger, joy, you name it.

Oh, and it's 0-0 at Stamford Bridge.

While it great news that these teams are beginning to backtrack and get themselves out of the ESL, I think these teams should still be punished. A financial punishment such as 95% of tv revenue for next season might be a good option. Or better yet ban them from CL next season and let the likes of Leicester, Everton & West Ham compete instead.

    Tom in Coventry

Forget all this one year punishment and points deduction. The 'Big 6' should have points deducted for 5 years to a level that the odds of a them getting into the Champions League is minimal. Attack the root cause which is the greed of the owners with the result of preventing them from making silly amounts of money for years. They cannot be allowed to get away with this attack on the essence of football, which is the hope.

  14. Bad for business?published at 20:40 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    BBC Business News

Manchester United shares are down more than 6.5% on the New York Stock Exchange, in a sign that investors are concerned about the prospects for the proposed European Super League and the extra profits that might bring for the football club.

Shares are currently trading at just over $16, having started the day at $17.16.

The price had already fallen about 3% today before reports emerged of Chelsea and Manchester City withdrawing from the competition.

  15. 'What chips do they have now?'published at 20:39 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Long term they have blown it. What do they do now? What chips do they have now? Half of the chips that they had have gone now. They can throw nothing at Uefa now other than what they’ve got from previous negotiations.

  16. 'Do we welcome them back or punish them?'published at 20:34 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Glenn Murray
Nottingham Forest striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Now we can see it crumbling before our hands do we bow down and welcome them back with open arms or do we punish them?

  17. Postpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

We expect further withdrawals from the European Super League given the amount of rumour there is right now. Twitter is melting down, journalists are bashing their phone keypads to update people and who knows what will be left of the wreckage by the morning.

But then what? Can football forget this mayhem?

  18. 'Woodward's departure amicable'published at 20:31 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

BBC Sport has been told the agreement with the Glazer family is amicable and there has been no falling out.

The announcement was brought forward due to the prospect of leaks.

The move will sever long-standing ties between Woodward and the Glazer family.Woodward played a major role in getting their controversial takeover completed in 2005.

However, after replacing David Gill as chief executive in 2013, he has been heavily criticised for the club's failure to challenge for the Premier League title and an, at times, shambolic transfer policy.

Woodward took the decision to sack David Moyes less than a year into his six-year contract as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor. Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho were also dismissed for failing to match expectations.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed in December 2018 and Woodward has stood by the Norwegian despite inconsistent form.

So Ed Woodward has been at Manchester United for over 15 years.

He will not be there next season.
