  3. Gerrard 'stung' by shock defeatpublished at 22:21 British Summer Time 25 April 2021

FT: Rangers 1-1 St Johnstone (2-4pens)

Steven Gerrard has been telling Rangers TV that it "stings really bad right now" not to have the chance to add the Scottish Cup to the league title.

"I am really disappointed and frustrated," he says. "It really stings right now and it should sting because we haven't been good enough in cup competitions since I've come in the door. That's the reality.

"Four weeks ago, I felt on top of the world, fantastic, proudest man in the world. Right now, I feel like the worst - that's football.

"In cup football, you've got to take your chances and tonight we haven't and game management gets a mention as we haven't done enough to get the team over the line.

"We have to give credit to St Johnstone. They were stuffy, they defended well, but we created the chances and we weren't good enough in the big moments."

I thought St Johnstone were defensively brilliant for the whole night. I thought Rangers were excellent in attack, played really well until that unbelievable end game. It was a game that had everything. St Johnstone's self-belief was extraordinary

  8. Clark aims for cup doublepublished at 21:51 British Summer Time 25 April 2021

FT: Rangers 1-1 St Johnstone (2-4pens)

On his two saves in the penalty shootout, St Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark adds: "It's a penalty shoot-out. It's a lottery. It's a case of who can keep their cool and score the most.

"It's up to the goalkeepers to try to help the boys out and save a couple. Thankfully, I've done that."

St Johnstone had held Rangers to a draw at McDiarmid Park in the league on Wednesday.

"We took a lot of confidence from the other night," Clark adds. "We knew, if pressed them high, we could nick it off them and create chances.

"We have won one cup and now hopefully given ourselves a chance to win another one now. Another final would be massive for everyone connected with the club."

  9. Clark claiming equaliserpublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 25 April 2021

FT: Rangers 1-1 St Johnstone (2-4pens)

Indeed, St Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark has been telling Premier Sports he was disappointed that Chris Kane got the final touch for the equaliser.

"I can't believe it," he says. "There have been so many times this season when I've thought about going up and looked at the bench and they said 'no'.

"This was all or nothing. I'm devastated not to score - but I'm delighted we've won.

"We were excellent and pushed them all the way. Credit to the boys.

"I've had that situation against me many times when you are shouting for someone to pick the keeper but everyone has a man.

"You just float about and try to get yourself on the end of it. "Ginge [Liam Craig] put a great ball in, I glanced it and I'm taking it. I don't care if he glanced it in, I'm taking it."

It was a majestic evening. It was drama from the first to the last and Zander Clark, you couldn't write that. After 81 minutes, he makes a great save from Morelos then he gets an assist for the equaliser and he saves two penalties in the shootout. It's not a bad evening's work for the St Johnstone goalkeeper

Rangers will wonder how they lost that one.

James Tavernier looked to have won it in three minutes from the end of extra-time.

But goalkeeper Zander Clark, who had made several crucial saves at the other end, lumbered up to meet Liam Craig's corner in the dying seconds to head towards goal and Chris Kane's final touch ensured a penalty shoot out in which Clark again proved to be the hero with two saves.

    Breathtaking stuff.

  19. FULL-TIME Rangers 1-1 St Johnstone (2-4pens)published at 21:11 British Summer Time 25 April 2021

    After extra time

St Johnstone are through to their first Scottish Cup semi-final since winning the trophy for the first time in 2014.

Rangers are knocked out at the quarter-final stage for the third season running.

Steven Gerrard's dream of a league and cup double is dashed.

St Johnstone's hopes of a domestic up double is, amazingly, still on.
