    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

Excellent save from Edouard Mendy, sharply off his line to spread himself and deny Boulaye Dia's low shot from 15 yards out.

What a tremendous signing he has been for the Blues, they desperately needed a number one last season, they sure got it.

Just past the half hour mark, Chelsea well on top and with a goal to show for it.

A very comfortable night for Thomas Tuchel's men so far and they look in a different class to their opposition.

It's nothing more than what they deserve.

They've been so comfortable in this game - they worked the ball down the left side and it's Kai Havertz with the lovely pulled back ball to the six-yard box for Ziyech to run in, with his body wide open and he pushes the ball into the goal.

    The goalkeeper had no chance.

It was a left footed finish into the right hand corner - superb.

Unai Emery was furious after his side conceded that goal, he was going berserk on the touchline.

Villarreal claim for a penalty as Yeremi Pino's low cross comes off the arm of the sliding Marcos Alonso but nothing doing.

Alberto Moreno then lashes a wild shot over bar.

The Yellow Submarine has to come out and fight now.

  5. goal

GOAL - Chelsea 1-0 Villarrealpublished at 26 mins

    Hakim Ziyech

    Deserved.

Chelsea were knocking and finally bash the door down.

It is a well-worked move, Marcos Alonso finding Kai Havertz in space down the left.

The German forward looks up and picks out Hakim Ziyech 12 yards out and he sweeps in a first-time finish into the far corner.

  6. Can Villarreal get any deeper?published at 20:25 British Summer Time 11 August 2021

    Chelsea 0-0 Villarreal

    Mark Sterling
BBC Sport NI at Windsor Park

Villarreal have barely got out of their own half in this opening 25 minutes.

They are sitting so, so deep and inviting Chelsea to come on to them, which the Premier League are doing happily doing.

They've already come close twice and they look assured, with Mateo Kovačić and captain N'Golo Kanté bossing the midfield.

The stats don't say that the Champions League winners always win the Super Cup, but it is the holders of the 'big' European trophy in total charge so far in Belfast.

Despite the pressure, Villarreal aren't flustered. You have to admire how resolute they are.

Hakim Ziyech swings in another cross, again it's cleared away.

  8. Closing down the oppositionpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 11 August 2021

    Chelsea 0-0 Villarreal

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Something Chelsea were really good at last season was breaking play up and slowing it down with tactical fouls in and around the pitch.

It was a little bit late by Rudiger but they're so aggressive in the way they go and close down the opposition.

It's probably something Tuchel wanted to implement when he came into the managerial position.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger leaves his foot in on Gerard Moreno and referee Sergei Karasev - the Russian Howard Webb - wants a word with the German.

    No booking on this occasion.

Now Chelsea have a free-kick in a promising position down the right flank.

    Chelsea 0-0 Villarreal

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Villarreal at this moment in time are playing 6-2-2 so that shows you just how dominant Chelsea are in this game.

They're trying to play counter attack but there's nobody to counter attack with.

Unai Emery is on the touchline, shouting and pointing at his team.

  12. Postpublished at 17 mins

    OK.

The stats say Chelsea have had 83% possession so far.

Sounds about right, Villarreal have barely strung two passes together.

  14. 'A real attribute for Chelsea'published at 20:16 British Summer Time 11 August 2021

    Chelsea 0-0 Villarreal

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've seen Callum Hudson-Odoi play in this wing-back position quite a few times now and he's done extremely well, as he's not afraid to do the defensive side of the game.

He's so quick in his recovery run so I think he could be a real attribute for Chelsea this season playing in that role

Timo Werner moving into the channels to find some joy, he can't find any.

Should Chelsea sign Romelu Lukaku, can they both be deployed in the same team?

Can Thomas Tuchel find space for Kai Havertz too?

If you'd never watched a game of football before and saw this chance for Raul Albiol, you'd be able to tell he is a centre-half.

A corner drops to the far post for the Villarreal skipper and he attempts a spectacular volley with his weaker foot, but ends up with an airshot and the ball bounces off his standing leg.

    Oops.

Villarreal now make their first foray forward but ex-Liverpool man Alberto Moreno's low cross is safely gathered at the front post by Edouard Mendy.

  18. CLOSE!published at 9 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Villarreal

Surely Villarreal cannot sustain this much pressure for the entire game.

Blues skipper N'Golo Kante picks the pocket of a Villarreal player deep in the final third and then lets fly with a drive which sails a yard wide.

Thomas Tuchel, standing on the touchline, likes it.

Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger is currently operating at the number 10 position, he's that far up the pitch.

    Chelsea 0-0 Villarreal

Brilliant play by Alonso down the left-hand side - it's a lovely ball across the six-yard-box on the floor, it's just waiting for a tap in.

    Dare I say it ... if Lukaku's playing ... that's a goal!
