Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

A huge cheer for Mason Mount there.

I'm pleased that he's left Chalobah on, I think he's had an excellent game and it's a great opportunity for him to play in a game of this magnitude.

This is where you need to drip-feed the players from the Euros back into the game, in preparation for this weekend if nothing else.

Unless it is an injury, you don't often see a manager making a change in a central defensive position, especially if your side is on for a clean sheet.

  3. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 65 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

Now a triple change for Chelsea and it is the Euros boys who went deep that come on.

Jorginho, Mason Mount and Andreas Christensen enter the action.

N'Golo Kante, Timo Werner and Kurt Zouma make way.

Trevoh Chalobah is having a super game at the back for Chelsea, he makes another crucial intervention inside his own six yard box.

The Blues have been linked with a big money move for Sevilla's Jules Kounde but might save the club a stash of cash if he continues like this.

  6. Villarreal come to the Windsor Park partypublished at 21:21 British Summer Time 11 August 2021

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

    Mark Sterling

The fact they are shooting into the Kop end, where most of their ever-enthusiastic fans are housed, could well be a factor.

And Chelsea definitely seem to have been affected by that Ziyech injury, but either way Villarreal have looked a different side since the break.

On the front foot, creating chances and not giving Chelsea a minute on the ball - they are properly making a contest of this now.

They probably should be level and you wonder now how Chelsea will respond.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 61 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

Villarreal's Yeremi Pino is booked for remonstrating against the assistant referee.

He feels he was fouled by Marcos Alonso but there was little in it.

    We pass the hour mark.

  8. Chelsea look 'disjointed'published at 21:19 British Summer Time 11 August 2021

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

For Chelsea it's a little disjointed, a little bit of complacency maybe or maybe they just need fresh legs.

Villarreal have become much more aggressive when they close down the Chelsea players.

They're not playing this back-six anymore, they're pushing players forward and that's also helping them.

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

Credit to Villarreal they've come back out stronger and they're giving it to Chelsea.

    Their flow is much better.

Tell you what, it is a contest now.

Villarreal are vastly improved and are causing Chelsea a few issues at the back.

Boulaye Dia is inches away from getting on the end of a cross but Trevoh Chalobah stretches full length to divert the ball away from goal.

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 55 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

Wow, just seen a replay for Gerard Moreno's chance and it is an incredible save from Edouard Mendy, making up for his error by tipping the ball onto the post.

    What a save.

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

    Stephen Warnock

It seemed certain that they'd equalise then.

He shaped himself perfectly - it crashes off the post but that mistake could by Chelsea could have put them back on level terms.

  15. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 53 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

    Villarreal almost gifted an equaliser.

Edouard Mendy slips from his goal kick and Boulaye Dia slips a pass through on goal to Gerard Moreno.

The dangerous yellows striker takes a touch and caresses a drive which kisses the foot of the post.

The La Liga side have hit the woodwork twice now.

Unai Emery is a real character on that touchline, you feel all the emotions and everything he is going through.

Not a good evening for his side so far though.

Hakim Ziyech is showered and back out, taking his place on the bench in a sling.

Meanwhile, Kai Havertz strides forward and smacks a left-footed drive from outside the area into the side-netting.

Hit it well, just lacked a bit of precision.

    Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm fully expecting Tuchel to have dressed the team down at half-time, telling them they've got to go out there and finish the game off as quick as you can.

We've seen the dangers that Villarreal poses on the counter-attack.
