Poor Phil Dawkes had to write our match report on that crazy Liverpool win over Atletico Madrid.

Read it so his stress was worth it. It's here.

    Liverpool

More from Jurgen Klopp to BT Sport: "They just won the balls and we didn't do the right stuff anymore. We chose the easy pass but we needed to play between the lines. The last line was pretty deep. Then they came with wing-backs and midfielders and we stayed there instead of accelerating. The game was too slow and that was what they wanted. That was why the momemtum changed.

"I saw it and our penalty is a penalty. I think the other one is not a penalty but I didn't expect it. I think it's the right decision. The red card was for sure unlucky but it is a red card. A foot in the face. It can happen. It was a tough game. Honestly, how we win it, I couldn't care less! On a night like this, getting three points is really nice."

On Diego Simeone not shaking his hand: "We don't like that but yes the situation is clear. I want to shake his hand. His reaction for sure, like mine, was not so cool. The next time we see each other we will shake hands definitely. It's nothing. He was obviously angry, not with me but with the game. There is nothing else."

  5. 'It was not so easy'published at 22:27 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "A tough game which we expected. We did surprisingly well at the beginning. Did we expect it to be that defensive? Probably not. It was not so easy. We scored two wonderful goals then played good football.

"It was 2-0 then obviously Atletico are not too bothered about having possession. The first goal we gave away then the second, it was nice play but the gaps we had there...That was not alright. At half time I think everyone in the stadium thought it was only going one way and we thought 'let's give it a proper try again,'

"We played a really solid second half in a tough game with intense football from both teams. We got the penalty, then there was a red card and obviously it was in our favour."

I've not even discussed the most bizarre thing tonight.

Sheriff Tiraspol are still top of Group D, despite losing 3-1 to Inter Milan tonight.

They are in a group with Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.

I'm telling you, the Champions League is just constantly crazy.

  9. A (very brief) round-uppublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

    Sooooo a lot happened tonight.

Manchester City beat Club Bruges 5-1 earlier in Belgium.

Paris St-Germain went back to the top of the group with a 3-2 win over RB Leipzig despite Kylian Mbappe missing a late penalty (and Lionel Messi opting not to take it despite being on a hat-trick).

Porto beat AC Milan 1-0 in the other game in Liverpool's group.

Ajax thumped Borussia Dortmund 4-0 and Real Madrid thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0.

It's massive. Jurgen Klopp will have to pick both the good and bad bits out of it before Manchester United on Sunday. But Liverpool keep finding a way. They have nine points from three games so they may only need a draw at home to Atletico.

  11. Winning in Madridpublished at 22:10 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

    Atletico Madrid 2-3 Liverpool

Liverpool are now unbeaten in 21 matches in all competitions. It is their longest competitive unbeaten streak since a run of 24 from January to May 1989.

They are also only the second club, after Ajax, to win a Champions League away game against both Atletico and Real Madrid.

Peter Crouch says Diego Simeone "let's himself down" by not shaking Jurgen Klopp's hand on BT Sport.

Joleon Lescott adds it was "cowardly".

    FT: Atletico Madrid 2-3 Liverpool

    Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Where do you start with this? First and foremost, Liverpool have won, and that's the most important thing. They played really well first 20 minutes and then were poor to end up at 2-2. Just a fabulous game. We've seen everything that can happen in football game. Liverpool had a few problems in this game, but they've won and you can't take that away from them.

  18. PSG win despite missed penaltypublished at 21:59 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

    FT: PSG 3-2 Leipzig

It's all over in France too with PSG coming from behind to beat Leipzig thanks to Lionel Messi's two goals.

Will he wish he had taken that late penalty instead of Kylian Mbappe? Yes.

PSG go above Manchester City at the top of Group A.

No idea how to sum that up.

There were a few Liverpool goals, then a few Atletico goals, then a red card, then a penalty, then another penalty got overturned, then a Simeone snub on Klopp.

    Lots going on.

In the end, Liverpool make it three wins from three in the Champions League and they are top of the group.

The Liverpool boss isn't happy and tells the Atletico staff that was disrespectful...
