Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk accepts he will continue to be under a lot of scrutiny as he looks to get back to his best following a long spell out with a knee injury.

"I know there are a lot of eyes pointing in my direction," he said.

"They were already before but will be now even more, but it's something I'm not thinking about.

"I feel like I am improving. I have work to do but I don't think about what others have to say or judge.

"The only thing I can do is try my best each and every game."

The pain of England's penalty defeat by Italy in the Euro 2020 final may still linger but there is a sense this could be the beginning of something special for the Three Lions. Exhibit A is Jude Bellingham.

In Italy, there was surprise Bellingham was not already a key man for the Three Lions when the sides met during the summer.

"Bellingham was talked about in Italy during the Euros, as was [Phil] Foden in Manchester City's Champions League run," Italian football expert James Horncastle told the BBC's Euro Leagues Football Show.

"There is a feeling that England wasted a hell of a lot of talent in that final and that more players should have got on the pitch and been integrated into the team earlier.

"There is a feeling it is not the end of something, it is the beginning of something for England, with Bellingham at the forefront of that."

It's close to a must-win, it's certainly a must-not-lose. If they lose, they're definitely going to be in a very difficult position. PSG are going to be hard to pin back, but Bruges are no mugs either and if City fall behind them, seven points to three, it'll be difficult to get back in there.

It's almost unthinkable that City won't get out of the group stage. A draw would be fine, but it's about the strongest team Pep Guardiola can put out there, and that tells you he understands that Bruges aren't some small club they can just blow away - they're much better than that.

Nope, not the film starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson - instead the location for Manchester City tonight in the Champions League.

Is it must win? Probably not. Is it must win if they want to finish top of the group? Yes. After losing in Paris last time out in Europe, City can't afford to slip up again in their quest to finish at the summit of Group A.

The Belgian crowd will be hostile, they'll make it tough for City - just like they did against Paris St-Germain.

City were a bit sluggish and below-par against Burnley, but I anticipate changes.

  9. Late call on Brazilian pairpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 19 October 2021

Club Bruges v Man City (17:45 BST)

Manchester City were forced to make a late call on goalkeeper Ederson and striker Gabriel Jesus.

The pair were involved with Brazil against Uruguay in the early hours of Friday morning but did not play in Saturday's 2-0 win over Burnley.

They flew straight to Belgium and were assessed yesterday. Ederson has made the cut; Jesus hasn't.

Kevin de Bruyne says he can understand why Raheem Sterling would be frustrated by not playing regularly for Manchester City.

"Rotation is important because we are playing four competitions and mostly going far," said De Bruyne.

"But I understand the frustration. I am a player that needs rhythm also."
