    Dusan Vlahovic (1 min)

Dusan Vlahovic scores 32 seconds into his Champions League career.

Villarreal lose the ball in midfield and Vlahovic races onto Danilo's long ball. He chests it down and seems to be too wide to get a shot in but he swivels and blasts it into the far bottom corner.

  5. 'We are here to give them a hard time'published at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2022

    Chelsea v Lille (20:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel on BT Sport: "I felt he (Romelu Lukaku) was a bit tired and exhausted, he has played a lot, extra-times, travelling and it was not the best performance (v Crystal Palace) so maybe it is easier to come off the bench and turn things around if needed.

"The two systems are not too different, we played 4-1-4-1 against Palace and now we have closer distances in passing. We have four players for the counter-attacks and if in doubt then go with what everyone is used to. We felt no need to change it.

"Perfect stage for the underdog to overperform, Lille are a physical team, disciplined team and have absolutely nothing to lose. It makes their preparation easier but we are here to give them a hard time, implement our style and intensity and take care of the result by performance and work rate."

Lille stunned moneybags PSG to win the Ligue 1 title last season but it has been a difficult ride since.

Christopher Gaultier, who masterminded the success, left just two days after their stunning triumph and took over at Nice.

Star players including Boubakary Soumare, Mike Maignan and Jonathan Ikone all left in the summer too.

They lie 11th in the table this season, a huge 23 points adrift of Mauricio Pochettino's PSG.

Jonathan David has been responsible for three of Lille's seven Champions League goals this season.

Should the 22-year-old Canadian score tonight, he will become the second youngest non-European player to net in four straight matches in the competition after a certain Lionel Messi (21y 155d in November 2008).

    Chelsea v Lille (20:00 GMT)

    Jonathan DavidImage source, Getty Images

Jonathan David's personality is as unassuming as the route he took into professional football. While he is not one to shout about himself, the 22-year-old Canada striker has taken the many challenges he has faced in his career in his stride.

Born in New York, David moved to Haiti aged three before his parents emigrated to Ottawa three years later. There, he made the first of several good decisions when he joined local club Ottawa Gloucester Hornets at the age of nine.

There was no meticulous development at an academy of a Major League Soccer team, despite there being interest from all three in Canada. He stayed with the club until he was 16 despite being courted by Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact.

After seven years with the Hornets he then took a giant leap, crossing the Atlantic to join Belgian club Gent. He impressed there, leading to a move to upwardly mobile French club Lille in 2020.

His rise has continued in Ligue 1, where he is established as one of the most dangerous forwards in the country. So, when he faces Chelsea in the Champions League last 16 tonight, he will do so as a striker who is attracting attention from some of the continent's biggest clubs.

  11. 'A big call, but I'm not surprised'published at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2022

    Chelsea v Lille (20:00 GMT)

    Jody Morris
Former Chelsea midfielder and ex-assistant manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you come off the back of a performance like Romelu Lukaku's at Crystal Palace then he might not have pleased the manager. It's a big call but at the same time I'm not surprised.

If the game is not coming to you, the top players go and get it and I do put Lukaku in that bracket. But there were times when the ball could've been delivered and wasn't, even though Chelsea were in crossing positions.

They can control the game but do not try to break the lines. There are opportunities for Chelsea to play the ball in, but there was only Lukaku in there with two or three defenders.

If you're a striker and coming off the pitch with only six touches in open play then it's not just the system and you have to look at yourself. Tuchel will not be happy with the way Lukaku is playing but Lukaku will also not be happy with the way he is playing.

Chelsea moved up into the Euro Club Index (ECI), external top-five this week at the expense of Paris Saint-Germain. With Lille ranked 33rd in Europe on the ECI, this tie is heavily in Chelsea's favour and they are given 82% chance of progress before the first leg.

In tonight's other match, Villarreal (ECI ranked 17) host Juventus (10). Juventus have 62% chance of progress according to our simulations.

Villarreal went all the way in the Europa League last season and they host Italian giants Juventus tonight.

This will be the first meeting between the sides and only the second time the hosts have faced an Italian side in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

They eliminated Inter Milan in the quarter-finals in 2005-06, before being beaten by Arsenal in the last four.

The legendary Argentine Juan Roman Riquelme played a big part in that run.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic makes his Champions League debut after his £58m move from Fiorentina.

Subs: Arthur, Pellegrini, Kean, Bonucci, Pinsoglio, Zakaria, Perin, Soule.

    Chelsea v Lille (20:00 GMT)

    Michael Duberry
Former Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Chelsea should win the match but it is a European night so don't underestimate the opposition. I am sure the manager will get everyone geared up for the game today.

I heard him say game by game and manage it that way, after tonight's game he needs to see where everyone is at, where the fitness is and see what he has got for Sunday (Carabao Cup final). I am sure he will be hoping to have the game sewn up by half-time so he can swap people around and give some other players some minutes.

Romelu Lukaku has been brought in to score lots of goals and hasn't, his form is not great and he will be lacking in a bit of confidence. He will be unhappy because any goalscorer will be like that when not scoring. If he was your central midfield player not getting on the ball, you would be worried but the way Chelsea play, he is not having a lot of touches. When you don't score, everything looks bad. He has to come out of this and he has the manager and team-mates to help him to do that.

    Chelsea v Lille (20:00 GMT)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Stamford Bridge

Romelu Lukaku was meant to be the last piece of the jigsaw - a mighty expensive one at £97.5m - to improve Chelsea's Champions League winners but there is no doubt he is currently a problem for manager Thomas Tuchel.

The knockout stage of the Champions League, as in tonight's last 16 first leg at home to Lille, was supposedly built for him but here he is on the bench.

If he cannot be trusted to start in games like this, then it is understandable that questions are being raised about Lukaku's standing at Stamford Bridge.
