Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, speaking to CNN Portugal: "Yes, we wanted more, but it was not possible. We are confident, this was demonstrated in the second half.

"Liverpool are a great team, but we are not afraid of them. We will work to get a good result in the second leg.

"I'm not happy that I scored, what I want here is to win titles, not score goals. I go home sad."

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "Coming here and winning an away game in the Champions League is tough.

"Benfica fought for their lives, we gave them a little bit too much but they deserved the goal as well, even though we could have defended better - they had counter attacks, it is not easy to keep the ball all the time and the more risk you take, they have really good players.

"It was a tough game, what I expected, the crowd was there, we knew 2-0 is nothing, nice but not more. They score the goal and it was much more open than we wanted but the goalie was probably the best player and made a couple of really good saves - we are two goals up, half-time, let's keep going.

"We usually score more [in those situations] but we didn't, mainly because the goalie, credit to him, and that is pretty much the story. We could have scored in the last minute, 4-1 would be nice but we are not in dreamland here.

"We know much more about our opponent, they won at Ajax, we are aware of the quality and have a nice game in between but then we will be ready again."

Atletico came out a little bit in the second half but it was Foden's vision and that bit of magic that made the difference. That was basically it in the whole game.

Atletico will have to try something different in the home leg. City will play the same way. Will they have as much possession? Probably not but Atletico have to do more if they want to go into the next round.

Greg: A slender lead for Manchester City but they won't care one jot, roll on the second leg next Wednesday.

Will: Simeone and his team showed themselves up at the end. Embarrassing, childish behaviour.

There is nobody better [than Foden] that can take it on the half turn and is really quick in tight areas. It is the advanced run that makes the pass.

City work a lot on those two midfield runners and as soon as they did, it was a wonderful finish.

There were two or three special moments from Phil Foden.

  8. Foden can go down 'as best English player of all time'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 5 April 2022

FT: Man City 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    BT Sport

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott: “Phil Foden is associated with Man City and I know what it means for him to play for the club. If he continues at this rate, he goes down as the best English player of all time with two trophies a season.

"His mentality sets him apart. If you compare him with someone like Wayne Rooney, you can see players who are hurt when they don’t win. He is obsessed, I love what I do but he NEEDS to do it. We had to remove the balls from the hotel because you could not get him off the training ground as he wants to improve all the time."

  9. 'We will go there to score and to try to win'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 5 April 2022

FT: Man City 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is speaking to BT Sport and is asked if he is happy with his side's performance: "A lot. We played an incredible top side who are difficult to face but it is a good result. We had chances to score a second and third.

"The guys were playing well but we knew that Gabriel [Jesus] and Phil [Foden] have a special energy and Jack [Grealish] has the quality to keep the ball. Yeah, today the manager was so clever.

"When we make a sub it is because we think it can be a bit better. It works sometimes but other times it doesn't.

"It is not easy to face a team with a lot of experience in this tournament. We will go there to score and try and win again."

Pragmatic. Boring I think. Atletico get results from it and tonight they got away with a 1-0 defeat.

City didn't really create lots, they were forced around the outside and didn't want to really cross it in as they don't have the aerial power.

But they did what they needed to do and got a win and go to Atletico after a positive result.

  11. 'A great result'published at 22:20 British Summer Time 5 April 2022

    FT: Benfica 1-3 Liverpool

    BT Sport

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch: "Liverpool were comfortable in the first half but credit to Benfica they came out and gave a good account of themselves.

"Liverpool at times were sloppy in the second half but they have just won 3-1 away from home in a knockout game in Europe.

"They can be sloppy but it is still a great result."

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis: "I don’t think Liverpool have expended a great amount of energy, there's plenty of fuel left in the tank for the upcoming games, no injuries.

"A huge tick on every aspect of a championship-winning team."

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen: "That Diaz goal was huge, absolutely huge. It has been a dagger to Benfica’s heart.

"Liverpool played a solid game, Benfica showed against Ajax last time out they could hang on in there but it is a big result."

  12. 'The third goal was big'published at 22:17 British Summer Time 5 April 2022

    Liverpool

Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a tough game, on top first half and could have gone in a couple more up, then we wanted to keep it tight but they got a goal which lifted the crowd and we got a bit sloppy. The third goal was big.

"He [Luis Diaz] got a nice reception from the start, playing for one of their rivals, but a good goal for him and a two-goal cushion makes a difference. Hopefully we can get the job done.

"I got quite a few lighters thrown at me [taking the corner], maybe it will stop them smoking - so take the postives from it. But you should try not to throw things on the pitch because it can hurt people, luckily none hit me."

Jurgen Klopp remains unbeaten in his seven Champions League matches as a manager against Portuguese sides (W6-D1-L0).

He moves ahead of Fabio Capello (6) as the manager with the most CL fixtures against Portuguese teams without losing.

I think Atletico will be happy with that. They didn't quite park the bus towards the end but it hardly moved. The Spanish champions sat deep, were well organised and they stuck to their plan of restricting Manchester City.

Patience was the key word. And in a game City controlled and dominated it was left to Phil Foden to unlock the Atletico defence.

  15. 'Foden was mesmeric at times'published at 22:07 British Summer Time 5 April 2022

FT: Man City 1-0 Atletico Madrid

    BT Sport

Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott on BT Sport: "Phil Foden impacts many games and is now impacting the big games. He definitely has to start (on Sunday), part of the reason he did not start was with that in mind.”

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand: "City were asked questions, can you break us down with our two blocks of five? It did not work in the first half, but they kept plugging away. When you have an artist like Phil Foden posing a different threat, it is difficult to adjust to during the game when you have planned for something different. Foden was mesmeric at times.

"Pep is planning two or three games ahead and probably already knows his team (for Sunday). If he was not thinking about playing Foden at the weekend, he might have changed that now."

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves: "That was a really hard game. In the past they could have lost that game but Atletico did not have a shot on target. The subs changed the game and City were by far the better team. They kept their composure and I think they will go there and win by more. Can you find a way to win not at your best? The great players decide the big games, Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden."

    Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne speaking to BT Sport: "The first half was tight in the second half we had a couple of chances and it was good that we took one.

"I made the run and Phil [Foden] found me perfectly, I needed to stay composed and luckily I did. It's very hard. They played with almost five at the back and with five in midfield. I recommend anyone that says anything [about us], that they try playing against that on the training ground."

"We have to stay composed and don’t try to get into their action. It is the way they play. One nil is one nil. I expect similar over there. If the game is tight they will have to attack a little bit more.

On being ready for Liverpool in the Premier League: "It is five days until Sunday. Both teams have played tonight. It is a big game and everybody is looking forward to it including the players."

Phil Foden came on and played like he was in a playground. The ball is like it is stuck to his foot. He is always looking forward and being positive. The Sky Blue shirts change their body language and they were all making runs when he is on.

De Bruyne scored but it all came from Foden's vision, his pass and his quality.

That's it, all over and Liverpool take a two-goal cushion back to Anfield.

For a long while in the second half it looked like they were in danger of throwing away the lead but now they look a good bet to go through to the semi-finals.

Fair play to Benfica, who made a real game of it in the second half and will perhaps feel they should have had a penalty to make it 2-2.
