    Liverpool v Benfica (3-1 agg, 20:00 BST)

Caretaker coach Nelson Verissimo maintains his belief Benfica can pull off a shock result at Anfield this evening.

“We know that we are two goals down but we believe that things can change, especially if we score a goal first,” he said.

“We’re going with that ambition. After the analysis we did, we realise that despite the difficulty we know we’re going to encounter, we have to believe.”

Jurgen Klopp's decision to start Mo Salah from the bench means Alisson is the only Liverpool player to start all 10 Champions League matches this season.

The Brazilian keeper has just received a big ovation after stepping out for his warm-up but it was not as loud as the one Benfica keeper Odisseas Vlachodimos received from the travelling fans from Portugal.

Benfica supporters have travelled in numbers and they are determined to make themselves heard at Anfield.

I think Klopp expects the tie to be over. This is the difference with Liverpool, they have the strength in depth now. I have seen Benfica a few times and I think it will be a formailty and it will be good for some of the fringe players to get minutes into their legs.

Former Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier on Radio 5 Live: "Diego Simeone is unbelievable to play for. He improved me as a defender, he worked me so hard on my own. He is a relentless coach. He is one of those managers where you need to run and you rarely get days off."

Jordan Henderson says Liverpool will not be lulled into a false sense of security despite establishing a 3-1 first leg advantage against Benfica.

The Reds captain, writing in the programme, said his team-mates will learn lessons from the last round against Inter Milan - when Liverpool won 2-0 in Italy and then lost 1-0 at home.

"Internazionale in the last round showed that, at this level, even a two-goal lead can be challenged and there are a few lessons from that tie that we will be taking into this game," adds Henderson.

"So we will be taking nothing for granted. There will be those outside of the club who will be writing Benfica off, but we will be doing nothing of the sort."

By announcing it now, it actually means the City supporters and Manchester City as a football club will be able to do something special for a very influential midfielder.

He arrived nine years ago from Shakhtar Donetsk. He’s a dynamic midfielder, very influential in his heyday making the team tick. By announcing it now we know he’s going back to Brazil but at least he will get the send-off he deserves.

You're looking at Fernandinho's career, what he wants to do and who he is as a person and, most importantly, his family and that is something that fans don’t see.

He’s in Manchester, away from home and still isn’t playing. You can imagine the conversations going on and he will be saying ‘Why are we here? We may as well go home and not play’.

Manchester City club captain Fernandinho says he “wants to play” after announcing that he was planning to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

The Brazil midfielder, who turns 37 in May, has been instrumental in City’s prolonged success during his nine years in Manchester but will head back to South America to finish his playing career.

“I have decided with my family that we will go and that is the most important thing,” he said. “I want to continue playing first-team football.

“I will go back to Brazil for sure.”

Fernandinho has made 23 appearances for City this season but admits his role over recent campaigns has been to support from the background.

“It’s the same as last season,” he said. “I don’t play much but I try to take care of the other players.

“I will help wherever I can, sometimes off the pitch and sometimes on the pitch.”

Gooner thoughts:Observations from tonight’s team news.. 1) It will be interesting if Benfica score first, considering Liverpool's changes. Would make for a good contest. 2) Is Grealish carrying a knock? Tough sign for him if not, benched for both the big games.

Friday marks the 33rd anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy and Liverpool are marking it with a minute's silence in memory of the 97 before kick-off.

A mosaic will also be displayed by fans on The Kop and Liverpool's players are also wearing black armbands.

Boss Jurgen Klopp and his backroom staff, along with other club officials, are wearing commemorative red '97' pin badges.

"I know there will be family members in the crowd tonight, there will be people who lost friends and there will also be survivors," writes captain Jordan Henderson in the programme.

"Whatever your experience, I hope you know that you have the support, love and solidarity of every single player and staff member at Liverpool."

Atletico Madrid have had their request to suspend the partial closure of the Wanda Metropolitano granted.

The Spanish club were told to close off at least 5,000 seats at the 68,456-capacity stadium for tonight's game, with Uefa's ruling due to "discriminatory behaviour" of Atletico fans during the first-leg match in Manchester.

In a tweet Atletico confirmed all fans with a ticket to Wednesday's game would be able to gain access to the ground.

  20. Villarreal await the winnerspublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 13 April 2022

    Liverpool v Benfica (3-1 agg, 20:00 BST)

    Neil Johnston
    BBC Sport at Anfield

On paper Liverpool start as favourites to progress to the semi-finals and two meetings with Villarreal on 27 April and 4 May.

But how much has last Sunday's top-of-the-table showdown with Manchester City taken out of the Reds?

Goals by Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz in Lisbon have put Liverpool in control of this tie but they still have work to do.

Despite their side trailing 3-1 from the first leg, plenty of Benfica fans have made the journey and have been enjoying the beer gardens surrounding Anfield on what has been a glorious spring afternoon.
