Great pressure from Atletico Madrid and City find themselves going back and across and eventually Kyle Walker leaks a pass out of play.

Ouch! Felipe absolutely clatters Phil Foden as the Manchester City playmaker goes up for a header, coming straight through the back of him with no chance of making the ball, but he escapes without a caution. Foden is down getting treatment.

Tsimikas finds himself in plenty of space on the left and picks his spot with a cross, but it's headed clear.

The hosts come again, but there's no room on the edge of the penalty area.

That is a poor effort from John Stones five yards out. Get that on target and it is a goal.

Manchester City do get a corner this time and almost make it count.

Kevin de Bruyne's in-swinging delivery is met by John Stones, who climbs highest on the edge of the six-yard box but can only guide his header over the crossbar.

Darwin Nunez is flagged offside as Liverpool's back line pushes up high. Replays suggest that was a fairly tight call though...

Liverpool get themselves up the other end, James Milner battling his way into the penalty area, but he can't get a shot away.

City are happy just to slow it down for a moment, it's been a frantic start. Kevin de Bruyne is dropping between the lines and sees the opportunity to spring an attack, drifting a diagonal ball in behind the Atletico defence that they never properly clear.

Ilkay Gundogan decides to have a pop from distance but it deflects behind for a corner. No, the referee didn't see that touch! Goalkick it is.

Lots of energy in the Liverpool front three, just as Jurgen Klopp asked for.

Diogo Jota causes problems, nipping at the heels of the Benfica defenders, but the visitors are awarded a free-kick to ease the pressure.

Ooof. Atletico Madrid are already showing their intent as Joao Felix bursts down the right and almost picks out a red and white shirt in the middle.

City have defenders back and might break themselves now. Pep Guardiola's side swiftly move from one penalty box to the other before the attack fizzles out.

It's like a basketball game at the minute.

Everton attacks a cross from the left but Tsimikas is there to knock the ball clear. Good defending - and now Liverpool look to build some possession at the back to slow things down a touch.

Every challenge is being applauded by the fans. The Atletico players are playing with a fire and a desire.

Rodri is punished for a foul on Koke and can't believe it his him rather than the Atletico man who has been flagged - the hosts were right up on the City midfielder as soon as he took a slightly heavy touch.

Anfield is in fine voice, as always on these grand European nights, as the home supporters look to aid their players in completing the job.

How will Benfica play this? Do they go all-out and try and sow some doubt into the minds of the Liverpool players?

Teasing diagonal ball from Thomas Lemar that is looking for Joao Felix's run, but Kyle Walker recovers well to meet it in the air and nod back to Ederson.
