Liverpool were left frustrated by 10-man Arsenal in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Anfield.

Granit Xhaka was dismissed after 24 minutes for denying a goalscoring opportunity - the Swiss midfielder catching Diogo Jota with a high challenge on the edge of his penalty area as he attempted to cut out Andrew Robertson's pass.

Trent Alexander-Arnold could not punish Arsenal further from the resulting free-kick, however, and the visitors produced a resolute defensive display to leave on level terms.

Despite coming under intense pressure it was Arsenal who registered the first shot on target 71 minutes into the contest, but a poor first touch by Bukayo Saka allowed Alisson to smother the England international's shot at close range.

Takumi Minamino blazed over the crossbar when faced with an open goal with Liverpool's best chance of the match in the closing stages.

The second leg takes place at Emirates Stadium next Thursday at 19:45 GMT.

The winner will face Chelsea in the final at Wembley at the end of February, after Thomas Tuchel's side completed a 3-0 aggregate victory over Tottenham on Wednesday.

  3. 'We will give it a proper go'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2022

    Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, talking to Sky Sports: "I thought we really started well, I liked it, it was how I wanted to start.

"We would've preferred to have scored the goal instead of them getting a red card. From that moment it looks like we are under pressure [to score] and we had to change the line-up for obvious reasons [before the game].

"In the second half we made a few changes, I thought it looked better and we had clear situations but it was not good enough.

"But it's a two-legged game and it's half time. I can't remember when it was 0-0 at half time, wherever I've been, and I thought 'we have no chance'. We will give it a proper go."

Silvio: Arsenal still have to beat Liverpool in the second leg and it's not an easy task at all. But tonight we couldn't get a better result, that's for sure.

  5. 'Fight, determination and brotherhood'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2022

    FT: Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta talking to Sky Sports: "We revel against the situation. The players showed great fight, determination, brotherhood. You saw the emotion, we never gave up. Credit to the boys.

"I don't know if the red card inspired them but it took the fight. You need a certain attitude to play in these games and the boys did that. We played the game we had to play, which is not our game. I have not seen it back, they checked it so probably a red card.

"To plan with the numbers we have, we don't have any midfielders, becomes really complicated, because whatever we do is not natural.

"The extra motivation to play a derby [at Tottenham on Sunday] brings the energy when you don't have it. No excuses, we have to play it."

Tipsforlife: Arsenal fans getting a bit giddy in the quick vote. Let's be realistic here. Arsenal survived. I don't think it will be any easier for them at the Emirates. This Liverpool squad isn't intimidated by the venue.

Naim Rahman: That was a performance I didn't think we had in us. The boys did well to stay in the tie. A little shaky at the end but really good overall.

Alan Newberry: It was like when Arsenal went down it 10 men, it simplified the game for them. All they had to do was defend and not worry about attacking.

Jake Thompson: What a gutsy performance that was by Arsenal - brilliant reaction to Sunday’s defeat. All to play for next week…

    FT: Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal's Ben White talking to Sky Sports: "It was not an ideal start but there is so much fight in this team. It's hard enough coming here with 11 men, absolutely superb from everyone.

"You have to concentrate the whole game and the result is well deserved. It's nice to defend like that as a defender. We were confident coming here and will give our all in the next game.

Who will get through to the final? Thumbs up for Liverpool, thumbs down for Arsenal

OK, a goalless draw at Anfield and it's on to Emirates Stadium next week.

Let's have a quick vote. Thumbs up if you think Liverpool will get to Wembley and thumbs down if you think Arsenal will do it.

Remember, away goals is no longer an issue in this tournament.

This for me is what being a professional is all about - down to 10 men you need blood, sweat and tears.

This is about doing it for your club, your team-mates and the manager. Arsenal deserve this. Brilliant from Arsenal. The organisation got them through it. Liverpool didn't have that spark in the final third.

It was an Arsenal performance I didn't think I would see. Very professional, well done Mikel Arteta.

Despite having a man advantage for 70 minutes, Liverpool fail to break down an extremely stubborn Arsenal defence.

It's a 0-0 draw but it is what Arsenal deserved.

We go to next week's second leg at Emirates Stadium all square, somehow.

Minamino was the hero in the last round, scoring in the 90th minute against Leicester to take it to penalties, which Liverpool won, but today it's his miss which could well be costly.

That is the big chance. All he has to do is half volley it with a side foot. Minamino just has to hit the target. It doesn't need pace.

Liverpool's Minamino to win it eight yards out in the 89th minute.

All he has to do is hit the target and he blazes it over the bar.

That's a bad miss. Jurgen Klopp is not impressed. Actually, it's a horrendous miss, Ramsdale had came for and missed a cross and only Ben White stood between Minamino and the winning goal.
