  2. 'I'm really satisfied with the way we started'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 22 October 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Aston Villa

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to Sky Sports: "I'm really satisfied with the way we started, our tempo, urgency, how dominant we were. We really believed we could do it against a really good side. We wanted to put the result on Monday aside.

"They did [learn from that Crystal Palace draw]. We started to win the game with the reaction they had from Monday.

"We are the youngest team in the league. We can't change that. We have to find why these things happen and put them right."

On Alexandre Lacazette: "He was terrific. The way he finished the last game, I already made the decision [to start him]. He worked really hard, he hasn't played many minutes."

On Thomas Partey's first goal: "Finally, he's been really trying and he deserves it. He could have scored another two. He was a happy boy."

On the penalty: "I think it was. This is why we have the technology. The referee couldn't see it and the VAR makes the right decision."

On Emile Smith Rowe: "Right direction. This is what he's capable of and what we have to demand."

  3. 'We got dominated physically'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 22 October 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith talking to BBC Sport: "First half we got dominated physically. I can take the second half. I don't expect us to get dominated physically though. You can't give teams in the Premier League a head start.

"We knew Arsenal would start quickly but we allowed them to control the first half.

"I am confused about the penalty. We spoke at length about the lower contact frivolous penalties.

"I have seen it once and can't work out if he touches ball first or man. If we are looking at a a penalty that long maybe they aren't given.

"I am still confused then. If we don't go to VAR, we are walking off the pitch for half-time. But he didn't, so the penalty is saved but how is he allowed to put the rebound in?"

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in each of his last four Premier League games at the Emirates Stadium for Arsenal.

The only time he has strung together a longer run was when he netted in five in a row between April and September 2019.

  5. 'This is why VAR is good'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 22 October 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Aston Villa

    Arsenal

More from Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Sport: "This is what you get [from young players]. They can get you the level, they need the consistency. That comes with experience and maturity. It has to happen now. They showed they can do it tonight.

“It was really impressive what they did, especially Nuno Tavares. This was his first start. To play with courage, credit to the boy.

“We reviewed the Crystal Palace game, how we started and why we weren’t consistent in the game. We put it right today.”

On the penalty award: “This is why VAR is good. The ref can’t see it. VAR overturned.”

  6. 'This is when we are good'published at 22:32 British Summer Time 22 October 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Aston Villa

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to BBC Sport: “The way we started the game and the way we continued [were good]. We attacked them really aggressively, we won every duel. We were creative, a threat. I’m proud of the team, they played really well.

“This is how we have to play. This is when we are good, when we play with real desire, real commitment and can have clear ideas of how to attack them.

“We are closer together as a team. Our decisions were good. We have good players.”

On only leading 1-0 despite having loads of chances: “That was the worry. That [second] goal was really helpful. We deserved many more. Villa are a really good side. When they had a little bit of the ball in your half they can cause problems.”

  7. 'We were not recognisable as a Villa team' - Smithpublished at 22:29 British Summer Time 22 October 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith talking to Sky Sports: "It was a very poor first half. Not recognisable as a Villa team we have come to know. They deserved what they got. We got dominated physically. If we had got through the half at 1-0 I would have fancied us, but 2-0 was hard to get.

"We knew Arsenal would start strong. I'd love to say it was the system and personnel but we just didn't play well. Didn't win enough balls, weren't good enough on the ball. I'll accept the second half all day long but the first half was not good enough."

On the Arsenal penalty: "It is a lower contact tackle. Grey areas, does he touch the ball first or his leg first? I thought they were the ones we were not going to VAR for. I am even wondering why he is allowed to put the rebound in.

"My understanding was he is walking off the pitch if he does not go to VAR, they cant give me any clarity on that.

"I am concerned by the first half performance today. You never like losing any game, we will put it right. We have players coming back and more options in a good squad."

  14. 'I've been waiting for this moment for a long time'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 22 October 2021

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Aston Villa

    Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey speaking to Sky Sports: "The team knew what to do we had to keep fighting and keep our intensity. At the end with the quality we have we are able to get results.

"All the team was frustrated and we wanted a win. That was the mentality we brought to this game today and we were able to get our result.

"I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. I think it was the right moment to have it and I'm very happy.

"The team performed very good. We have to do this every weekend and every game and with this we can achieve beautiful things. They deserve it. They have been supporting us when we have been down and when things have gone bad. This win is for them and I hope they enjoy it."
